Where Did All The Colors Go? Creating a World Of Pure White

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

Adrien Broom, Connecticut based photographer, recently successfully funded her new project “Where did All the Colors Go?” on Kickstarter. The project is a multimedia story for children in the forms of a children’s book, a short film and also an integrated platform to be viewed through a tablet. For both the photo and video production, Adrien created amazing sets featuring different colors. The first color Adrien shot was White. Check out how she built the set and of course the final results.

Adrien: “This story follows a girl who wakes up to a world from which all color has vanished. Everything is white: clouds, marshmallows, bunnies, doves, cauliflower, chef hats, cakes and the moon (among many other things) create this new experience. After exploring the World of White, she finds a door that will lead her to her first discovery, the World of Red. Throughout this story, the young girl will travel from one environment to another rediscovering all the colors that create the world we live in. Finally, she will arrive at the end of the rainbow where all the colors meet.”

Building the WHITE set took Adrien and her crew over 3 days. In this time lapse video …

Blackmagic Solves Infinity Focus Issue with Cinema Camera, Will Require Hardware Fix

This is a brief excerpt from NoFilmSchool

There have been a number of reports regarding the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and getting proper infinity focus with quite a few lenses. Earlier in the month we showed you a few videos documenting the issue, and Blackmagic so far has been very responsive, telling us at that point that they were looking into the issue. We now have a solution straight from the company, and it looks like it’s going to be a hardware fix if your camera has already been delivered.

Here was the issue, along with one of the worst offenders so far, the Tokina 11-16mm lens:

This was posted by Krisitan Lam in the Blackmagic Forum:

I want to give you an update about this issue.

The cameras are all shimmed and calibrated to 44mm as per the reported focal flange depth of EF mount. I use the term “reported” as Canon does not publish the specifications officially so the exact expected tolerances are not known.

When checked against a collimated cine lens, we expect the Blackmagic Cinema Camera to get accurate focus according to the witness marks on the lens. For example, at focus chart placed 6 ft from the camera sensor plane will be …

Oscar winning documentary partly shot on iPhone

This is a brief excerpt from Cinema5D News

You know the old mantra of artsy filmmakers, “it’s not about the camera”. Deep down you know it’s absolutely true. We all geek out about new cameras and the latest and greatest, but the truth is that a bad story doesn’t become a tad better because it’s shot beautifully. I wrote about this fact in a lengthy blog post called “It’s not about the gear” a while back.

If you didn’t believe this by now, hold on tight for this story: The documentary “Searching for Sugar Man” – winner of the Best Documentary Academy Award 2013, was partly shot on an iPhone.

According to CNN, director Malik Bendjelloul started to shoot the film on real 8mm film but then ran out of money – the then resorted to the app “8mm Vintage Camera” on the iPhone to complete it.

The app is $1.99 in the App Store and allows you to create vintage looking 8mm style videos with your iPhone without much effort. You can chose between film stocks and some other details.

So before you find an excuse for not making that movie you always wanted to make because you don’t have the right gear, think …

Rolleiflex Hacked To Take Fujifilm Instax Images

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

We love crafty people and the crafty projects that they do. Kevin over at TheFilmme hacked his TLR to take Fujifilm Instax images. The way to do this is by using a black film changing bag, either the Instax adapter for the Lomography LC-A+ or an Instax camera, and a Rolleicord Plate Adapter. The entire hack requires removal of the camera back and placing the film very securely and safely in the plate adapter–hopefully within a dark room or changing bag if you’re that skilled.

The results are pretty darn cool if you nail them correctly. Check out the Google Translation if you’re interested.

15 Awesome Photos Of… Cars

Car photography can be done in many different ways using different techniques. Some people like shooting it with gelled strobes, some like to lightpaint it or just shoot with available light. There is no one right way to do it. Shooting cars is something most photographers can try: just take your (or your friends) car and start shooting it – but as easy as it is to try – its not easy to produce breathtaking results. Photos of the White House Gutted During Its Truman Reconstruction

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Did you know that the White House was completely gutted and rebuilt on the inside between 1949 and 1952? After decades of poor maintenance, the building was in danger of collapsing in 1948, which forced President Harry Truman to move out and commission a complete gutting and rebuilding of the building’s insides.

The U.S. National Archives has been publishing photographs showing the gutted White House to its Flickr photostream. The reconstruction project required that the entire interior of the house be dismantled so that new load-bearing steel beams could be put in.

Although the exterior of the house was basically unchanged when Truman moved back in on March 27, 1952, the interior finishes had little historic value left in them. The entire cost of the rebuilding project: about $5.7 million.

Here are some photographs captured during the process, and the original captions they were published with:

Socialmatic Camera to Arrive in the Real World with Polaroid Branding

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

A few months back we shared the news that, assuming Instagram’s trademark lawyers didn’t get ahold of it first, the Socialmatic camera would indeed be making an appearance IRL. And now, none other than Polaroid has stepped up to place its name on the Instagram icon turned physical camera.

The final product will be known as the Polaroid Socialmatic Camera, and should come touting camera bags, lenses, filters and other Polaroid-branded accessories per the MoU agreement C&A Marketing just signed with Socialmatic.

Physical specs aren’t mentioned, so we assume they’ll stay the same: you can expect 16GB of storage, a 4:3 touchscreen, 2 lenses, optical zoom, LED flash, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and an internal printer. If we’re lucky, the camera may even follow through on its promise to print out Instagram snaps complete with a QR codes that will send people towards your account.

We’ll keep you up to date as the details are ironed out, but you can expect to see the Polaroid Socialmatic Camera hitting store shelves in Q1 of 2014 for an as of yet unannounced price.

First Impressions: Sony NEX 3N

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Sony recently announced the NEX 3N in the US and we were fortunate enough to join the company at the Museum of Natural History on a little tour of the area as well as some personal hands on time. The 3N and 3 series in general have always been amazingly great when it comes to ergonomics and the 3N is no exception. But the weird thing is the zoom lever now added in around the shutter release. Otherwise, the camera was very comfortable to hold and shoot with–though sometimes limiting. Despite that, this is one stylish looking camera.

We tested a pre-production version and our copy was literally right out of Japan. In fact, the menus were all in Japanese and I had to use my knowledge to try to navigate around. I was able to shoot some JPEG files but for some odd reason, the camera mostly saved the RAWs instead. However, the JPEG files I shot were final production quality–which tells us that Sony is using a previous sensor in this camera.

Film Noir-style Engagement Photos from a 1920s-Themed Shoot

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Feb 28, 2013

Belgian photographer Filip Bunkens recently did an engagement photo shoot with a couple named Mattias and Adinda, who proposed that it be 1920s-themed. Last Sunday morning they gathered at a local jazz bar for the session.Bunkens worked with stylist Linda Van Waesberge and his girlfriend Sara for the outfits and props. A fog machine was brought to the location for creating a smokey environment.

Everything was shot on a Mamiya RB67 medium format SLR film camera and a 90mm lens. His film of choice was Rollei Retro 80s black and white negative film. Bunkens tells us that he tested the light using a DSLR and some black and white exposure Polaroid 672 pack film.

After 5 hours of changing the light, decor, and outfits, Bunken ended up exposing two rolls of 10 frames.

Here’s an interesting thing about some of Bunkens’ shoots (including this one): he leaves it up to the clients to decide how much they want to pay after they receive the finished photographs.

A Sneak Peek at the Google+ Photos App in the Chromebook Pixel

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

When the new Google Chromebook Pixel was announced a week ago, one of the new apps announced alongside it was for managing photographs. Photography played a bit part in the laptop’s design: it has a 12.85-inch, 4.3 million pixel touchscreen (the highest pixel density of any laptop) that has a strange aspect ratio of 3:2 — the aspect ratio of classic 35mm film.

The new Chrome Photos app was created as a collaboration between the Chrome team and the Google+ team, and the influence shows: it looks remarkably similar to the photo experience on Google’s social network.

Ease of use was one of the big things the development team focused on. Plug your SD memory card into your Chromebook, and your photographs are automatically uploaded to your Google+ account in full-res.

The app is designed for the Pixel’s touchscreen and for social interaction. You’ll find the same +1 and commenting options as the web version of the app.

To make things faster and easier for you, the app has special “brains” that can help you do preliminary organization of your photos based on image quality. It can determine which images are blurry and improperly exposed, and which are fine. This …

Thoughts on Music for Filmmakers

This is a brief excerpt from the Hurlbut Visuals blog

By Po Chan, Director of The Ticket and The Last 3 Minutes, and Lydia Hurlbut

Po Chan:Plato said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” I agree with Plato wholeheartedly because music is a very important element, or I should say “nutrient,” in my life and my work. A perfect example of this is the music that I chose for The Ticket.

While I was writing the script, I was repeatedly confronted with a dilemma. How could the meaning of my story, all the theories and feelings that I wanted to express, be conveyed only in physical movement and dialogue? That was not enough. I needed more room, another dimension. It was then that I realized that a song with well-written lyrics is what I needed.

So after I finished the script, I turned to my dear friend, The Fishermen Three, an amazing singer and songwriter. He has a very similar take on the feeling of love. I presented him with the script to see if the story would make his heart sing.

A few weeks later, he came back to me singing “Those Kisses.” I cried because …

Cullinator Lets You Sort and Edit Photos Using a Video Game Controller

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Photographer Ed Pingol was sick of battling carpal tunnel every time he needed to cull or edit photos in Lightroom. So instead, he developed the Cullinator, a software app for Mac that pairs perfectly with an attachable gaming controller to keep you editing and culling ergonomically for hours without fatigue.

Here’s a short demo in which Pingol shows you just how quickly he can sort and label photos using the controller:

Of course, you could go the DIY route and program your own software for a PC or Mac-compatible gaming controller. But if that’s not your cup of tea, the Cullinator packages Pingol is offering over on the product’s website have you covered.

You can choose to purchase the Cullinator + Editor package for $129 or just get the Cullinator for $50, with an upgrade to add the editor costing another $79. The first package comes with the controller and Mac app that will allow you to both sort and edit your photos in Lightroom 4; the second only offers sorting capabilities for $79 less; and the third is an editor upgrade for those that chose to start off by only buying the sorting package.

Regardless of the package you choose, your order …

3D Award Finalists Announced for 2013 Sony World Photography Awards

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

The finalists for the 3D category of the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards were announced today. Selected by the judges from the World Photography Organization, the three finalists are: Michele Abramo Puricelli (aka Michael Abraham) from Italy, Matjaž Tančič from Slovenia and Nick Saglimbeni, USA, who won the 3D Photographer of the Year title in 2012, the award’s inaugural year.

My computer lacks the processing power to actually see the 3D in these, but I’ll take Sony’s word for it that the 3D makes these images awesome.

Michele is a keen filmmaker who has spent the past 14 years embracing new and exciting challenges. He spent eight years working in the commercial, television and film industry and has been actively involved in 3D filmmaking (and photography) since 2009. Since then he has had the opportunity to work for Sky 3D and the feature film Jack Giant the Slayer, which is scheduled for release in March 2013. What you see above is a Nikon D60 DSLR.It’s interesting seeing the different ways cameras were constructed by looking at their innards. Some cameras have a lot of see-through space, showing areas that are less metal and less dense. Others are built like tanks, and their X-rays show that.

Canon 70D Coming in March?

This is a brief excerpt from PhotographyBay

Recent rumors point to a Canon 70D arriving as early as next month. Previous rumors suggested a 24MP in the 70D, as well as the rumored 7D Mark II.

Having similar (or even the same) sensor in the 70D and 7D Mark II doesn’t seem to be a problem given the common 18MP sensor found in the 60D and 7D. A number of features set them further apart than just the sensor.

That said, the 70D is rumored to be more on the level of the Canon 50D build than what we see in the smaller and more plastic Canon 60D. Returning to this size and build quality suggests that the 7D Mark II would likely move further into a more “pro” realm of build quality and features – even though it would still feature an APS-C sensor.

Would the rumored redesign to bring the 70D back into 50D build quality realm be more welcome? Or, do you prefer the smaller size and lower price of the Canon 60D?

Carbon Fiber Mini Crane Micro Jib Video Samples

This is a brief excerpt from CheesyCam

Here’s a fun little video a few friends of mine came up with to showcase basic dynamic camera movements using one of those new Carbon Fiber Mini Cranes (a.k.a Micro Video Jibs). This version breaks down into two pieces to about 30″ inches, but can telescope to a full 6.5′ Feet long.

In this video you can see that the crane was not used at full extension. Unlike a fixed length crane, these telescoping versions are handy when the project doesn’t require as much travel, or if you’re in tight spaces. It also helps to use it at shorter lengths so you can work with less counterweights. You can find these Carbon Fiber Mini Video Jibs following the link via eBay (Click Here).

iPhone App Turns Your Phone Into Camera Remote

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

Do you like to remotely trigger your camera? Do you also like iPhones? Enter Satechi’s BT Smart Trigger. For $44.99, this little guy will happily trigger your camera’s shutter via Bluetooth. It also works as an intervalometer, meaning you can time lapse with the greatest of ease…in between Angry Birds Star Wars. At the moment it only works for iPhones and Canon DSLRs, although they are planning to add compatibility with the Galaxy SIII and the Galaxy Note 2.The camera trigger connects to said camera via USB and rests on the hotshoe adapter. The battery life is said to last up to 10 years, and it has a range of about 10 feet per the Bluetooth 4.0. The app has both a basic shooting mode, a “Manual Shot” mode where one can take long exposures and a “Time Shot” mode where one can capture time-lapses.

Of course, Canon’s official remote app (coupled with a 6D and WiFi radio) can deliver a live feed of the camera’s viewfinder right to your phone. The Satechi BT Smart Trigger, however, is much cheaper.

2D Wedding Photographs Converted into Gorgeous 3D Slow-Mo Zooms

Remember that slow-motion wildlife footage that consisted entirely of still photos animated with parallax? French photographer Sebastien Laban does the same thing, except with his wedding photographs.

In the video above, all the apparently 3D scenes you see are actually the result of using some After Effects magic on ordinary 2D photographs.Want to learn how to do this to your own photos? Video media maker Jamie Francis created this tutorial on how this effect can be created in After Effects:

New DSLR at the End of March [CR2]

This is a brief excerpt from CanonRumors

Replacement to 60D?We’ve been hearing over the last few days about an announcement coming at the end of March, the exact date is unknown at this time. If I was a betting man, I’d say it’ll be the 19th or 26th of March, 2013.

We’ll see a new DSLR, most likely the replacement for the EOS 60D.

There’s no spec list to speak of yet, but we’re quite confident that the 70D will be a big step up from the 60D in terms of specs. We expect it to return to the level that the EOS 50D was at, especially in the build quality area. No more “super Rebel” for the XXD line. This will then push the 7D Mark II to a higher level as well.

No mention of lenses being announced, though we’ll probably see a few new PowerShots. At this time, no mention of a G1 X replacement.

DIY Wireless Remote Created with a Cable Release and Arduino

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

I need the ability to wirelessly take photos, but my Fujifilm X100 did not have a conventional shutter release — it has the old fashioned ”cable” release.

After playing around and buying some cheap cable releases off eBay, I was able to build a working wireless shutter using an Arduino, servo, and a cheap wireless shutter for a Canon DSLR.The wired cable release that I had before

I had thought of using an IR remote. However I am planing on using this outside, and I’m not sure how well IR works in direct sunlight. So I went for an RF option.

These remotes have the half press focus option, but I would not be needing this. Also, when you bend the wire cable it changes the length of the “press,” meaning that it doesn’t always work.

To make it more reliable, my solution only takes photos without focusing, but since I am going to be using manual focus only, it’s not a problem.

I mounted a servo in a small enclosure. It pushes on the cable, firing the camera shutter:

The servo is controlled by an Arduino board that triggers the servo when it gets the command …

How to Print Your Photos Onto Wood

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Photographs printed onto wood are hangable, durable, and sustainable. The technique I use involves printing the image onto a special film, preparing a wood panel with custom gel medium, and then combining, leaving the wood grain in the light colored areas of the image showing through.

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how you can use this process yourself for beautiful wood prints.

Materials

Baltic birch panel at least the intended size of your photo (smaller is ok if you’re willing to crop) or bamboo or maple

Digital image to print

Gel transfer medium

Inkjet printer with pigment ink (there is a dye method, I haven’t used it)

Transfer transparencies

High quality paintbrush (so no hairs easily come out) or small foam paint roller

Brayer

Spoon

Very fine, sharp needle

150 or 220 grit sandpaper

Sanding block

91% isopropyl alcohol

Tack cloth

Krylon or similar UV overcoat (glossy or matte)

Scotch tape

Watch, clock or stopwatch (something that counts in seconds)

Goggles with good coverage for sanding/routing

A face mask for when using the alcohol mix.

Optional

Step 1: Mix your gel

I use DASS Supersauce. They make corresponding transfer films as well, but most are interchangeable with the exception of …

New Panasonic Sensor Can Capture 3D Photos with Normal Lenses

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

When Samsung debuted its single lens 3D technology, the company put the magic in the lens. By using two shutters, the lens is able to capture left and right eye views of the scene that the camera then translates into three-dimensions. Panasonic’s response is to put the magic in a CMOS sensor also creates a three-dimensional image, but in a very different way.

The technical details are a bit dense, but the gist is as follows: by using a lenticular lens and a layer of digital micro lenses, the system splits and intensifies light rays that correspond to those hitting your right and left eye onto the corresponding pixels of the sensor.

Once the hardware has done its job, some quick processing turns the subsequent images into 3D creations. According to Gizmodo, the technique is similar to that used by the Nintendo 3DS.

And although the tech is currently limited — image distance and actual distance vary by about 5 percent and the sensor only enables you to capture 3D of objects within 1m of the lens — the new sensor could potentially bring 3D photography and videography to everything from mobile phones to SLRs.

Portraits of People Posing with Their Passions and Pastimes

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Jack Daly, a photographer at the University of Portsmouth in the UK, is working on a portrait project titled People with Passions. Each photograph in the series features a person posing with the objects of their passion (e.g. things associated with their interests, pursuits, and pastimes). The portrait above is of Portsmouth resident Matt Sills, who’s passionate about photography.

Daly tells us that it started out as a small and simple idea at first:

It started small and snowballed quite quickly into a large project, where some unique and impressive people started contacting me to be involved. People seem to love the idea and the simplicity, as well as learning about the person in each shots life in one image.

Here is a selection of photos (and the captions that go with them) from the project:

Rob Daly: My brother and complete opposite. Rob is an academic that loves literature and can speak languages like no tomorrow. He could live anywhere and get away as being a local.

Thomas Kelly: Thomas has a great collection of WW2 memorabilia, and is always on the hunt for something new for his collection. What I love about his stuff is that …

Cycloramic Adds Panoramic Photo Mode, Still Coolest Party Trick in Town

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

A couple of months ago we introduced you to Cycloramic, an app that used your iPhone 5′s vibrations to take hands-free panoramic video. At the time the app could only shoot video, but after many requests (including our own) the Cycloramic team has released the much-anticipated V2.0, complete with Guided and Handsfree Panoramic Photo modes.

The update includes two parts, a Guided Mode for iPhone 4, 4S and 5 users, and a Handsfree mode exclusive to those who own the iPhone 5.

If you have an iPhone 4, 4S or 5, Cycloramic’s new Guided Panoramic mode allows you to take and view creative 360-degree panoramas that you shoot by hand. iPhone 5 users, however, can also take advantage of the new Handsfree Panoramic mode that shoots photos the same way the app shot videos in version 1.0.

You can check out the video at the top for a full demonstration of both modes. And if you haven’t yet jumped on the Cycloramic bandwagon, you can do so on the iTunes app store for the unchanged price of $1.

Proposed New Hampshire Bill May Make Aerial Photography a Misdemeanor

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

New Hampshire House of Representatives member Neal Kurk (R) recently backed a bill that plans to ban almost all aerial photography in the state by classifying it as a class A misdemeanor. The bill, HB 619-FN, seems to be aimed at protecting people’s privacy; however, the fact that it specifically excludes government officials from the ban has raised concerns regarding just that.

Here’s the brunt of the legislation:

A person is guilty of a class A misdemeanor if such person knowingly creates or assists in creating an image of the exterior of any residential dwelling in this state where such image is created by or with the assistance of a satellite, drone, or any device that is not supported by the ground. This prohibition shall not apply where the image does not reveal forms identifiable as human beings or man-made objects.

We’re not sure how the ban would affect Google Maps images, nor does the bill specifically mention aerial videography, but the prohibition from taking photos that “reveal forms identifiable as human beings or man-made objects” would leave NH aerial photographers with significantly fewer subjects to choose from.

Government officials, however, seem to be excluded from the …

Award-Winning Washington Post Photo DQed for Excessive Photoshopping

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

There have been several controversies surrounding award-winning photography of late. First there was photographer Harry Fisch, who had his Nat Geo Photo Contest award stripped for cloning out a bag. Then Magnum photographer Paolo Pellegrin’s ethics were called into question when he was accused of misrepresenting the subject of his award-winning photo.

And now another controversy has come to our attention, this one revolving around the photo above, taken by Washington Post staff photographer Tracy Woodward. The above photo was the version that was submitted to and won the White House News Photographers Association’s (WHNPA) ‘Eyes of History’ stills photo contest, but not before it was significantly manipulated in Photoshop.

Here’s the original:

As you can see, the altered version removed (for the most part) the referee in the background, while enlarging the winning athlete’s head — both alterations that are prohibited in the contest’s rules.

Although the photo was published unaltered in the Post itself, the paper still considers Woodward’s submitting an altered version to the contest a breach of their policy. In an interview with News Photographer magazine, the Post’s photography director MaryAnne Golon gave the paper’s side of the story, …

Long-Exposure Infrared Photos of Trees

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Feb 27, 2013

London-based photographer Martin Stavars has a beautiful series of photographs titled, “Portraits of Trees.” For each of the photographs, he set his infrared camera up in front of a large tree and opened up the shutter for anywhere between four to ten minutes. The combination of the “infrared look” and the blurry grass and leaves gives the images a dreamy quality — the stationary tree trunks are the sharp subjects that ground each picture.

Here’s what Stavars says about his interest in photographing the outdoors:

I’ve always been fascinated by landscapes – places that are absolutely desolate, where I can stay one on one with nature. For me, the growing joy right before pressing the shutter button as well as the possibility of interacting with the world filled with inspiration is as important as the creative act itself. This initial fascination has rapidly grown into obsession that eventually took control over my life.

Since the beginning of my adventure with photography, every landscape has been an unforgettable experience, thanks to which I’ve learned how to interpret light – the single most important (and the single most waited for) factor that shapes my images. On the other hand, …

Night Drive from Sea Level to 10k Feet for One Photo

This is a brief excerpt from Learning DSLR video

I drove about 6 hours to get one photo.

On my vacation to Maui I wanted to capture one awesome photograph that I could use on my about page on my site. I had found an awesome shot on 500px by Eric Kraus that inspired me to make the journey to the summit of Haleakala (thanks to Eric for giving me permission to use his photo in this video). I got up early for my night drive from sea level to 10k feet to capture the sunrise.

Not knowing the island well I began to think that all the gas stations didn’t open until 5am and I would have to coast down the mountain if i ran out of gas at the summit which was how it was looking, but I finally found one.

Once I hit 8,000′ feet I was in the clouds I started to worry me that I came all this way for nothing. Perhaps an awesome shot was not in the cards for me.

I was hoping for somewhat if a spiritual experience by myself to ‘worship’ Haleakalā “house of the sun”, but there were surprisingly more people at the summit than I thought. However, everyone was …

Canon 5D Mark III HDSLRs freezing during video recording? sign petition!

We’ve recently been notified that some Canon EOS 5D Mark III HDSLRs are showing signs of freezing while recording video clips and there’s a petition to get Canon to admit there’s a problem and to fix it.

Maxim Drygin has been writing us to let us know about this problem (frankly, it seems like only a small number of people are seeing it – but if you have it, it isn’t pretty!) and he’s sent in a lot of information. Initially it seemed like it happened to people recording long videos, but if you watch the two videos below, you’ll see on this guy’s camera, it takes only about 15 seconds!

But most importantly, here’s the petition – please consider signing it.

Demo freeze video

Canon 5D MK3 freezing during video capture. Settings 1920×1080 24p ALL-I ISO 1600, 1/50, f1.4. Sandisk CF 90mbps card(also does it on SD 45mbps card) 35mm f1.4 lens

Max sent this too: “Alex from Magic Lantern team suggested The guy who recorded the lock-up freezing to install and run Magic Lantern alpha 3 software to see if it reports a card error. Steven did so, but still had the freeze occurring even with ML3 installed and reporting the card test was ok”

Can’t see the video in your RSS reader or email? Click Here!

Petition

You have probably heard of many customers globally having problems with Canon 5Dmk3 camera freeze and lost files, both video and stills.

Also, here are some of a quite a few forums discussing this problem for your reference:

- news.doddleme.com/equipment/canon-5d-mk-iii-experiencing-crashes-on-long-video-capture/

- nofilmschool.com/2013/02/canon-5d-mark-iii-freezing-video-capture-petition/

We need to draw your attention to us needing you to help us to get it fixed by Canon ASAP.

We can’t afford losing our files any longer and using the gear that have a problem that is intermittent.

More info

More from Max:

Also, one of the 86 supporters as of now wrote me this today: “Hi Maxim Drygin an UPDATE just received a follow up call from Canon Australia regarding the camera freeze issue that i experienced almost a year ago. (I think your online petition is getting through!) The caller asked me a series of questions regarding the fault and mentioned several times they are investigating the cause, he also said they only have 2 known cameras that have been looked at (mine and another) so it is very difficult to assess with only 2 units. I found it weird that given all the online complaints that we have heard only 2 cams have been taken in :/ he left the conversation saying that he will keep me informed on any progress they make. Fingers crossed”.

Have you seen this problem?

There’s also a thread at Canon Rumors who is collecting voices about the problem in a poll
