Today I posted the news on the incremental AF100A camera update, and it got me thinking about Panasonic as a company in the midrange film & video production market. I’ve been watching the demise of Panasonic’s hold in this market for the past few years. It’s not a pretty sight, particularly when you consider that they started at the top.
With the release of the AF100 back in late 2010, they were the first to bring a large-sensor, affordably-priced digital cinema camera to market! And then, crickets. Nothing. In the DSLR space, they released the GH2/GH3, and (thanks in part to it’s hackability), that has turned out to be a surprisingly powerful workhorse. But the GH series is not a production system…like Canon DSLRs, it’s a budget workaround. A powerful workaround, but a workaround nonetheless.
The AF100 is a perfectly fine production camera, and produces nice images. But it’s a bit old in the tooth, and for a number of reasons has never really been very highly sought-after.
