FocusMaker – A unique focusing tool for stills lenses

Here’s a tool that I don’t really know how to classify…it’s called the FocusMaker, and it’s a simple $89 device that straps directly on to a camera lens, and gives you a few focus indicators and stops. It seems to be aimed specifically at Canon zoom lenses, though appears would work on any lens it can physically fit.

The question is, where exactly would you use this system? The manufacturer talks about the FocusMaker as a follow focus tool, but to me it doesn’t really accomplish what a traditional follow focus is designed for. At first glance, it appears to be a solution looking for a problem.

Digging deeper, I see this as more of a hybrid focus marking tool for one-man-band type shooters. The kind of shooter who doesn’t want to mess with rods and a camera rig, and just needs a quick way to set a couple marks on a DSLR lens. The kind of shooter that doesn’t mind resetting the marks if the lens focus ring gets bumped past infinity, or swapping this device on different lenses.
