Nikon D400

This is a brief excerpt from Northlight Images

The D300 was announced in August 2007 and the D300s in July 2009

The age of the camera suggested a replacement for 2011, but nothing appeared in 2012…

Nikon still hasn’t produced any good prime lenses specifically for its DX (crop) format, and with Dxxxx cameras moving up in specifications, some have wondered if there is a place at the top level for Nikon’s DX range?

See the full Nikon DSLR Timeline below for approximate ages of different cameras.

An update over the D7000, any D400 later in the year needs a bigger jump in specs than we’ve seen in the lengthy D7000-7100 interval.

It’s worth noting that Nikon Europe describes the D7100 as the company’s ‘flagship DX model’

The EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x Has Arrived at Canon Rumors!

This is a brief excerpt from CanonRumors

Retail Version!I was sitting around staring at the ceiling today, then the doorbell rang, and behold, the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x had arrived. A great sadness poured over my wife’s face, as she realized I would be gone all weekend.

It’s good to know that it’s actually real and shipping to retailers, it looks like it’s going to be a fun weekend!

I’m also planning to head back to Kenya in June if everything lines up, as it will be the perfect place to put this lens through its paces.

On Bathroom Detail All Week

This is a brief excerpt from Strobist

We’re remodeling two bathrooms, and as part of a barter deal with the contractor I am doing a series of before and after photos. I’ll post more about that later, but I just wanted to drop something in quickly about the lighting on the detail shots I was doing today. It’s a quick-and-dirty, two-light setup and the effect is almost like a charcoal drawing—sort of 2-D and 3-D at the same time. And try as I might, it’s pretty hard to mess this up.__________The two lights in this case are a gridded key and a ring fill. And while there aren’t many universal solutions in photography, if you are shooting detail shots this one comes pretty close. The key is in the way the two work together. The gridded key (in this case an Einstein e640 mono with an 8.5-inch standard reflector and a 30-degree grid) spotlights the object, creating an area of full exposure just where you want it and falling away where you don’t.The ring flash (in this case, an SB-800 in an Orbis ring flash adapter is the floor to the exposure. Remembering this is all flash (i.e., no ambient) I like to …

Aputure Amaran AL528W AL528S AL538C LED Video Light Tests

This is a brief excerpt from CheesyCam

Here’s an unboxing of the new Aputure Amaran 528 LED Video lights, and a few tests to show the difference in spread (diffusion) and light output. [Note: The readings on the C-500 Light Meter may not be accurate with the full spectrum of LED lighting, but should provide a baseline for comparison between the lights. Do not accept my readings as an accurate source for each manufacturers specifications]

The lights are about the size of an iPad (not as thin), so carrying around a three piece lighting kit should be an easy task. For a very portable solution, these ultra portable Light Stands are a great combination (found here). The three different Amaran LED Video lights share mostly the same features which include a Digital brightness display, Double power supply system (battery or AC), the ability to charge batteries from the unit while being powered by AC, a Battery power indicator, and all come with a nice Carrying case.

DaVinci resolve grading tips on profile documentary film

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stop Academy

An important of our 3 day documentary class is editing and finishing.

During the 3 day class we held earlier this year in New York we made a profile film of a singer/songwriter Eleanor Dubinsky.

The actual shoot was only 3 hours in total and we shot on multiple camera formats.

The cameras that we use included:

Canon EOS C300

Canon EOS C100

Blackmagic design Cinema Camera

Canon 5D Mark II

Sony NEX 5n

The challenge when editing all of this content together is that different manufacturers have different basic ‘look’ from their sensors and processing and so even with care taken to set white balance between all cameras, you still see major differences between shots when you edit.

In the previous part of this discussion Grading using FCP X on Advanced Cinematic Documentary

So if you want more control then I suggest taking a look at DaVinci Resolve Lite. Its free and if almost fully functional.

Word of Warning…. It really needs some processing power and a decent graphics card. But I run it on a late 2011 iMa 3.4GHz with 24GB RAM and 2GB graphics and it runs ok. It actually runs faster in my Retina 15″ MBP. But it does …

Canon Milestone – 90 Million EF Lenses Manufactured

This is a brief excerpt from CanonRumors

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 29, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced its parent company, Canon Inc., has reached a new lens-manufacturing milestone with the production of its 90-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras. Canon turned out its 90-millionth lens, an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (released in September 2012), on May 23, 2013.

The production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the Company’s Utsunomiya Plant. Since that time, supported by a wide range of users, demand has steadily increased and production has expanded. Today, Canon produces EF lenses at four of the Company’s manufacturing bases, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in southern Japan.

EF lens production surpassed the 10-million-unit mark in 1995, doubled to 20 million lenses in 2001, and went on to reach 30 million units in 2006 and 40 million units in 2008. Afterward, due to the rapid spread of EOS digital SLR cameras, production of EF lenses gained further momentum, crossing the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009, reaching 60 million units in January 2011, and hitting the 70-million-unit mark in October of the same year. In August 2012, lens production reached 80 million units …

Canon’s 1D C Firmware Update Hits America With More Details; 1D X Firmware Too!

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Yesterday, we reported on the new Canon 1D C firmware update that was being released in Europe. It allowed the capture of 25p 4K video as well as fixed a couple of other problems. Information on the new firmware was given today in a product advisory from Canon USA under the 1D C listing. According to them, “Firmware Version 1.2.0 is for cameras running either firmware version 1.0.2 or 1.1.9. If the camera’s firmware is already version 1.2.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.” This could mean that cameras are shipping with the new firmware already in place. Once again, Canon’s support team will be the ones doing the firmware update.

The previous firmware update apparently addressed almost all of the previous concerns listed on the advisory page.

In the comments and on our Facebook page yesterday, we had lots of wary Canon users stating that the company doesn’t want to firmware getting into the hands of 1D X users to turn their cameras into 1D C‘s–the inference for this came from the fact that Canon stated that the cameras are the exact same with some minor differences. We’re currently checking with Canon about why the …

First Impressions: Nikon Coolpix A

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

The Nikon Coolpix A was an answer to a problem that Nikon didn’t really have. They decided that they wanted to have their own fixed-lens large sensor compact camera as it would seem that this is an emerging market. The Coolpix A has a 16MP APS-C sized sensor with a fixed 18.5mm f2.8 (28mm equivalent) lens which makes it a suitable camera for discreet street photography. Adorama Camera was kind enough to loan me one for review, and I’ve had a little time to spend with the camera so far and I’m here to share my first impressions.

Review: Unified Color HDR Expose 2

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

It’s been a while since HDR Expose 2 was first released, and we took a first look at the software a while back. HDR Expose 2 is a relatively affordable and easy to use HDR software which still leaves you a lot of options for fine tuning the HDR effect. Anything from a slight dynamic range improvement to over-the-top HDRs with insane colors and local contrast can be achieved with the software. In this review, we take a closer look at its functionality and assess what and who it is suited for.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Very powerful tool that can do almost anything, incredible amount of options

Comes with a well illustrated PDF user manual

Presets allow for quick conversions with good results

Cons

Amount of sliders and options can be confusing, aren’t always self-explanatory

Sometimes slow to react on input and apply real-time changes

Anti-ghosting algorithm is easily fooled

Panasonic G1 + SLR Magic 12/1.6

Gear Used

For creating the HDR pictures in this review, I used bracketed exposures taken with a Panasonic G1 camera and SLR Magic 12mm T1.6 and 35mm T1.4 lenses as well as the Panasonic Lumix 20mm f1.7 lens.

Quickly after the announcement, people began to–rightfully–complain about Adobe’s new licensing model, making it virtually impossible to make a one-time investment into their software and forcing users to pay continuing subscription fees. In answer to the critique that the company received for this move, Adobe now released an official statement covering some of the complaints.

We want to start off by reinforcing that we continue to believe that the move to Creative Cloud will benefit the wider creative community because of the constant stream of innovation that we’re able to deliver. (…)

For photographers, we are looking at potential offerings that recognize the photography community – because it is so broad – has some unique needs.

We’re not entirely sure what to make of this, honestly. While the first paragraph sounds like Adobe is not going to back off from their decision to offer their high-end products on a subscription base only, the second paragraph sounds like there might be a solution coming for those who prefer a ‘classic’ software …

Canon 1D C Firmware Update Version 1.2 Adds 25p 4K Option

This is a brief excerpt from PhotographyBay

The Canon 1D C is getting a firmware update to add 25p 4K video capture in firmware version 1.2.

The new EOS-1D C feature upgrade makes a number of new features available in the camera:

Provides support for 25.00p (fps) video recording frame rate (PAL settings) at the camera’s maximum 4K resolution.

A function to disable the image size selection button has been added.

Fixes a phenomenon in which a difference in exposure appears on every other shot when shooting continuously and the auto-lighting optimizer is turned on (on weak, standard or strong).

Furthermore, this upgrade provides a number of additional fixes for existing features:

Fixes a phenomenon in which video recorded onto an external recorder sometimes becomes two-layered if it has been recorded through HDMI output.

The video frame rate now displays two additional decimal places, e.g. 24p -> 23.98p (fps).

Fixes a phenomenon in which the on-screen guidance cannot be fully displayed when setting the maximum limit value for the “Auto ISO Range” option.

Corrects errors in the Portuguese language menu.

The upgrade is available through authorized Canon service facilities. More info at Canon Europe.

The Sony-Olympus Partnership is Coming to Bear Fruit

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Slowly, the new partnership between Sony and Olympus (which was formed in the aftermath of the Olympus accounting scandal) is coming to bear fruit. While Sony has been manufacturing the sensors for the latest Olympus Micro Four Thirds models for a while now, it is now very probable that Olympus is going to develop new lenses for Sony. Sony Alpha Rumors quotes a Google tranlated Japanese website as the source of an official statement from Olympus manager Hiroyuki Sasa, whereas The Amateur Photographer says Olympus officials have not yet confirmed the rumor.

However, considering that “mutual parts supply” has been part of the deal between Sony and Olympus, it is entirely possible that this is accurate, and Olympus will soon provide Sony with lenses. We can only hope so, as Olympus has been creating magnificent optics since back when they made the analog OM system.

Rokinon About to Release a 300mm f6.3 Mirror Lens

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

It appears that Rokinon (also known as Bower, Samyang, walimex pro) is about to release a 300mm f6.3 mirror lens for APS-C-sensored mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, such as the Sony NEX and Fuji X series. While we have no official confirmation from the company yet, the pictures appeared on its facebook page first, so the news seems legitimate. There are little details known so far, but Photography Bay states a retail price of US-$ 299 and a release date sometime in June.

Tokina is already offering a similar lens, albeit for Micro Four Thirds, with exactly the same specs and price tag. We reviewed that lens a while ago. While I don’t know the exact imaging circle of the Tokina lens, it is entirely possible–considering it is all manual in operation–that it can be adapted to APS-C without loss in image quality.

Leica ‘Mini M’ Leak Reveals a Fixed Zoom Lens APS-C Camera

This is a brief excerpt from PhotographyBay

Leica Mini M (front) and Leica X2 (back)

My previous expectations that the Leica Mini M teaser would ultimate be a true “mini” Lecia M with a interchangeable lens mount and an APS-C sensor appear to have been a bit too lofty.

A leak of the Leica Mini M (still apparently not the true model name) reveals that it will be a zoom lens alternative to the Leica X2. While the X2 features a 24mm f/2.8 lens, the upcoming Mini M will sport a much slower 18-46mm f/3.5-6.4 lens (28-70mm equivalent).

The camera will feature a 16.1MP APS-C sensor, which is the same resolution of the X2. Additionally, the Mini M will capture HD video and can use an external viewfinder. Leica will ship the camera with a copy of Lightroom for processing raw files from the Mini M.

Pricing is expected to be €2,450, which converts to more than $3,000 USD. The Leica X2 currently runs around $2,000 USD, so it’s hard to imagine the Leica Mini M with a very slow zoom lens at $1,000 more than the X2.

Gear Bag: Five Great Tips for Dealing with Cables

This is a brief excerpt from Strobist

If your lighting gear includes sync cords, power cables and/or extension cords, this could happen to you. Don’t laugh, pictured is my actual Ancient Sync Cord Burial Ground from the past 20+ years. But over that time I have also gotten a lot better at dealing with cords, and picked up a few cool tips along the way. Keep reading for my favorite five.__________1. Cable Ties: A GodsendI can’t tell you how much I love these things. They are cheap ($7 for 100) and that’s a good thing because you’ll be glad you bought a hundred. The roll of 100 is seen at top, followed by a single tie and then a cable thusly contained. If it’s a cable in my house, it gets one of these. For sync cords and power cords, it turns a pile of spaghetti into an easily manageable collection of cords.Better power cables will come from the factory with the ties included (my Profoto power cords did). It took me about a week to realize I wanted all of my cables to behave like this.2. Also: Use Them For Strain ReliefWhen the wires are uncoiled, I use the cable ties to fasten the cords to my light …

Canon Celebrates Manufacture of 90 Millionth EF Lens

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Canon is partying big today, the reason being that the company just manufactured their 90 millionth EF lens. Yes, you read that right. Ninety million. That’s a nine with seven zeroes. On average, that means one in every eighty people on this planet owns a Canon EF lens. Quite impressive. The press release states:

The production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the Company’s Utsunomiya Plant. (…) EF lens production surpassed the 10-million-unit mark in 1995, doubled to 20 million lenses in 2001, and went on to reach 30 million units in 2006 and 40 million units in 2008. Afterward, due to the rapid spread of EOS digital SLR cameras, production of EF lenses gained further momentum, crossing the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009, reaching 60 million units in January 2011, and hitting the 70-million-unit mark in October of the same year. In August 2012, lens production reached 80 million units and now, a little over nine months later, the company commemorates its latest manufacturing milestone of 90 million lenses.

Incredible at what kind of pace they churn out lenses theses days, isn’t it. Oh, and in case you were wondering what the 90 millionth EF lens was: an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L …

Review: SLR Magic 35mm T1.4 (Micro Four Thirds)

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

The SLR Magic 35mm T1.4 cine lens has been out for a while now, and indeed we posted our first impressions of it a while back. Since then, I’ve spent considerably more time with it and used it in a number of different scenarios. Besides the Panasonic G1, I’ve also tested it on a Sony NEX-3 (via adapter), on which it really shined. So how does this lens, which offers quite a lot of speed for the money, fare in daily use? Does it keep up with expectations? Read the full review to find out.

The following paragraph is copied from the first impressions post.

The 35mm T1.4 is designated as a cine lens, hence the T rating instead of the traditional f-stop rating. For those unfamiliar with these terms, the f-stop rating indicates the physical aperture size of the lens, i.e. focal length divided by aperture diameter. The T rating indicates the actual light transmitting capabilities of the lens, which is important for video productions that often switch lenses but need to maintain a constant image brightness. T1.4 means that the amount of light transmitted through the lens is identical to a virtual f1.4 lens with …

Photoshop CC New Features Roundup from Adobe MAX

This is a brief excerpt from PhotographyBay

Many of the new features in Adobe Photoshop CC were somewhat lost in the news of Adobe’s move to a subscription-only service for Photoshop CC and other Creative Cloud apps. However, there are many new whiz-bang features coming to Photoshop CC next month, most of which were highlighted to some extent at the Adobe MAX conference earlier this month.

Adobe has released several of Adobe MAX conference videos that go more in-depth into Photoshop CC and its features than what we’ve seen thus far in press releases and “top features” videos. Check them out below.

Wondlan Video Wireless Follow Focus + 5″ LCD HDMI Monitor

This is a brief excerpt from CheesyCam

Here’s a video from YouTube member Kicapiproduction showcasing one of Wondlan’s new Wireless Follow Focus System products. The new WFF is designed into a single unit that contains an 5″ 1200×800 resolution HDMI monitor [thanks Kicap].

According to the details of the video, the wireless focus system is rated to have wireless range of up to 100 meters, but the the wireless monitor is only rated for a 30-60 meter range. I’m not sure what’s going on with the use of an external HDMI cable to the monitor. It seems like they just threw an HDMI monitor inside of a case along with one of their existing Wondlan Memonic Wireless Follow Focus system (found here).

Wondlan Memonic Wireless Follow Focus system

With more refinement i’m sure they can shrink the entire package down, keep all the circuitry internally, and actually make it one single unit. Looks like a cool system, but might be a bit early on the design right now. The unit isn’t posted on their website yet, but i’ll keep an eye open to how this new product develops.

Cotton Carrier Announces New Hand Strap with Arca Swiss Plate

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Hand straps are meant for the photographer that prefers to hold their camera in their hand and not get tangled up in a big, long neck strap. Cotton Carrier has had their hand strap out for a while, but today they’re announcing a version with an Arca Swiss Plate that goes into the camera’s tripod socket via a 1/4 20 screw.

The Cotton Carrier hand strap has adjustable velcro and the plate is made of anodized aluminum. In real life use, this will mean that you can put the camera right onto your tripod head without needing to take off the strap at all. That’s pretty darn nifty for sports photographers on the go.

The new Cotton Carrier Hand Strap goes for $19.95, there is still no word on a release date yet.

Independent LED Video Light Test Project – Teaser

This is a brief excerpt from CheesyCam

Ever wonder how your LED light compares to others on the market? 600 LEDs? 1200 LEDs? Adjustable Color Temp? 5600K? CRI? 2200 Lux? Yadda Yadda Yadda… There’s a few dozen LED video lights on the market, but i’m not sure if there are true standards in which they are being tested before the specs are listed on the packaging. Light output can be measured at different distances, and if the rating on the box seems pretty high it’s possible it was tested at a distance of 1 foot while another may have been tested at 4 feet away.

There are just too many variables, so I finally decided to run a few tests of my own in a more standardized fashion. I’m starting out by placing various lights at a distance of 4 feet. I’ll be able to compare the spread (diffusion) of each light with this method. I’ll be using the Sekonic C-500 Color Meter to take a few LUX readings to see which has the highest light output. I’m also able to take color temperature readings and check for color bias (green/magenta cast).

Magic Lantern Hack Enables Raw Video on Canon 50D

This is a brief excerpt from PhotographyBay

Just when we thought the Magic Lantern madness couldn’t get any crazier, they go and enable raw video capture on the 5-year-old Canon 50D. By taking advantage of the 50D’s ability to push out a video feed from the sensor for live view, the Magic Lantern crew dug further to apply what they’ve learned from recent 5D Mark III and 5D Mark II experiments to draw raw video out of the 50D.

While we’re not going to see the quality and resolution that we are from the 5D Mark III, the early results are very promising for this discontinued camera. Check out some early sample footage from the 50D operating at 1592 x 720 resolution.

Just imagine if Canon unlocked the power of these cameras from day one – without the need to hack them for additional functionality…

While you can no longer buy a new Canon 50D, they are still floating around used in the neighborhood of $500 give or take. B&H usually has a couple in stock used.

Patent – New Superzooms

This is a brief excerpt from CanonRumors

Replacement to the EF-S 18-200 IS?A patent has come about showing two lenses, one for APS-C at 18-200 and the other for full frame with a focal range of 28-200.

We’ve been told in the past that the 18-200 would be getting replaced, and we have heard about an EF-S 18-300 in development. It would also be a good idea to release an inexpensive superzoom for a full frame camera as well. The 6D would welcome such a lens.

The Amerikans: Micha Hilliard explains how he scripted a non-fiction ‘documentary’

This is a brief excerpt from DSLR News Shooter

Guest post by Micha Hilliard

Cinematographer, director, subject and producer

“Vacuuming just happens to be one of my passions,” exclaims Walter during his interview. He goes on to list the virtues of his German water-based Hyla vacuum cleaner. My crew and I are set up in a luxuriant parlour at “Walter A. Frey Funeral Home,” surrounded by chandeliers and Chinese porcelain. The interview has turned to the subject of embalming. I cast a sideway glance at the polished mahogany casket in the adjoining room and wonder how I’ve ended up in this place with a production team and a pile of costly equipment.

Back in 2010, director Mika Johnson and I shot the first episode of ‘The Amerikans’, a series that takes a local and collaborative approach to documentary filmmaking. Our goal was to reveal the extraordinary richness of the lives of ordinary people in Northeast Ohio. We wanted to bring together disparate communities. At the time, I was an undergraduate student and we had to schedule all our shoots around my classes. We did not own any equipment. Will Third Party Firmware Void Your Canon Warranty?

This is a brief excerpt from CanonRumors

Are you covered if you use Magic Lantern?DIY Photography did a great article on third party firmware and whether or not it voids your warranty. They did it for various brands including Canon, Nikon and Panasonic. Of the three, only Canon is “okay” with you using third party firmware and your warranty will not be “voided”. The only catch is if you “brick” the camera and it’s related to third party software, Canon will not cover that repair.

Canon’s Response“There is no such thing as “voiding” the Canon warranty, there are simply repairs that are covered, and those that are not.

For instance, the repairs for a failure of the buttons on the back of the camera within the warranty period, on a camera that does not show any evidence of mishandling or misuse, would likely be covered. Repairs for a camera that is “bricked” or otherwise having issues directly related to using a third party firmware would not be covered.”

Canon EOS 50D Shoots RAW Video

This is a brief excerpt from CanonRumors

Canon EOS 50D Cinema Camera!Magic Lantern has made it possible to shoot RAW video on the 5 year old Canon EOS 50D. The forgotten 15mp APS-C predecessor to the EOS 60D.

The software is very early in development, but at least one person that has shot with the camera and firmware is quite impressed. EOSHD notes that the camera has hardly any moire or aliasing in early tests and the ISO performance is terrific. The larger pixels on the 15mp sensor really do make a positive difference over the 18mp sensor that we’ve had for years now.

Below is a bit of information of what works well with the current software on the EOS 50D.

Resolution & Performance.Results (24 fps):
