How I Caught The Photo Bug: Features Editor Abram Goglanian

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

All throughout my childhood I can recall a camera being present at most family functions, sometimes I’d even be the one to “press the button”. If only I’d known how important that shutter button would become to me in the future. Fast-forward to my 8th grade year (which would be around mid-1998) and I had signed up to be part of the school yearbook. This marked the first time I would be intentionally setting out to take photos and begin to document life happening around me. I’ve always been something of an outsider (though I prefer to call myself a keen observer) and suddenly having a camera in my hand opened my eyes to an entirely new world of creativity.

That first year I only used my mom’s point-and-shoot camera, which obviously had limited capabilities, but it was enough to get me interested in taking the next step. Something worth mentioning is that up to this point, skateboarding was a big part of my life, to the effect that my entire thought process revolved around the action-sports industry and it would continue to be a central part of my being into my 20s. Once I began …

Purging Purgatory: Three Ways to Free Yourself from the No-Man’s Land of Creative Blocks

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Few things can be more agonizing for an artist than the purgatory of a creative block. It is a dangerously stale landscape, and it can last days. Months. Even years. The latter perhaps being worse than a prison sentence, because at least in prison there’s someone to feed you, and there are no dishes to clean, no vacuuming to do, or bills to pay. And everyone knows these are some of the least favorite things for an artist to have to deal with in daily life, let alone your average human.

But worse yet, the thought of having to tackle daily responsibilities while the lack of creative flow looms is enough to make anyone beg for mercy. Either that, or finally dust off their gifted copy of The Artist’s Way and give those Morning Pages a chance to work some magic.

Any glitch in the output, mild or severe, can truly create a sense of imprisonment, and if left unchecked can shackle other areas of your life, leading to a range of emotional, mental and physical suffering.

Zeiss Explains the Naming Convention Behind Their New Mirrorless Camera Lenses

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

In the mirrorless camera world, there is currently loads and loads of excitement behind Zeiss’s new lenses. To refresh, we previously reported on the announcement of the 32mm f1.8 Touit and 12mm f2.8 Touit back around Photokina and shortly afterward, we got to see them up close and personal. These lenses will be made for Fujifilm X mount and Sony E mount (NEX)–leaving Micro Four Thirds out in the cold.

Now back up a second–Touit isn’t part of any of Zeiss’s typical naming conventions. But today on the Zeiss Lens blog, the company explained why the name came out. According to the company, “Touit stands for good visibility, agility, mobility and diversity, qualities which also aptly describe the new ZEISS lenses for mirrorless camera systems.” The cited that this took inspiration from car manufacturers naming certain series of cars after types of wind.

More importantly, how do you pronounce Touit? Apparently, you say, “Do it.” Crazy cool, huh?

Improved AF FunctionalityEven when the EOS 5D Mark III is equipped with an extender and lens making possible a maximum aperture of f/8, the firmware update supports AF employing the camera’s central cross-type points (currently compatible with maximum apertures up to f/5.6). Review: Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 SP Di VC USD (Canon EF)

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

When we began the review of the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 SP Di VC USD, we pondered which type of photographer would purchase a lens like this. It is a clear competitor to the equivalent offerings from Canon, Nikon and Sony but isn’t as expensive. Most professionals tend to go for a a primary brand vs a third party (as per recommendation of the retailers)–although some third party lenses have made excellent tools and third party manufacturers in general are fighting back very hard in their recent revamps. I asked this question of myself as every day I packed my camera bag to go out and shoot.

But is this really a lens that you’d buy?

Pros and Cons

Pros

- Positively stellar image quality

- Sharp wide open

- We didn’t get a single blurry shot with the VC enabled.

- Excellent build quality

- Tripod bracket mount comes with the lens

- Accurate and fast focusing for a lens like this

Cons

- Heavy

- Fairly large

- Can’t get over the feeling that I was holding a howitzer when I shot with it

The best of NAB 2013: Our round up of the show

This is a brief excerpt from DSLR News Shooter

Reported by Mat Gallagher and Dan Chung

The Newsshooter.com team at work

This year’s NAB show brought with it some truly stand out products that combined simplicity with technical awesomeness, which was good to see this after many years of over complex, not quite right designs.

Kessler is one company that I love because of their elegantly designed sliders and their new Pocket Jib Traveller is no exception (see video). The unit has been painstakingly designed to not only pack to as small a size as possible but it also has been made lightweight, thanks to the drilled sections in the body. Something no one else has even considered.G-tech’s drive system is storage made simple. Their latest devices (see video) are highly proficient field drives, the larger of which uses a raid system for speed, and plugs into a base unit once you’re back in the office for super quick transfer speeds.

Rigs wise, it was nice to see Zacuto’s Recoil looking much improved (see video) and I love the ergonomics of the shoulder pad. The restyled Tornado follow focus was great, too. There was innovation from Movcam (see video), and Matt Allard was …

Manfrotto 577 501PL Plate on New Manfrotto MVH500AH

This is a brief excerpt from CheesyCam

Now that Manfrotto has released a new and slightly different MVH500AH Video Fluid Head, there’s been a few questions about compatibility – especially for those who want to pick up or upgrade to this new video head and have invested in a bunch of QR plates. For a bit more information on the actual video head, check out this earlier article on the MVH500AH (here).

First, Does the Manfrotto quick release plate from the 577 QR Adapter or common 501PL plate fit on the new Manfrotto MVH500AH video fluid head? Secondly, Does the new Manfrotto MVH500AH quick release plate fit on the older 701HDV, 501, 502HD Video Fluid heads? Hopefully the video below answers some of those questions.

So the new MVH500AH seems to accept the 501PL plates or the quick release plates from the 577 adapter (with 501PL) pretty easily, but it will not be compatible with the 504 plates. Also, the MVH500AH quick release plate will not work with the older Manfrotto Video fluid heads such as the 701HDV or the 502HD.

DxOMark Redo: 5D Mark III Sensor Better than the D800?

This is a brief excerpt from PhotographyBay

Shortly after the Canon 5D Mark III and the Nikon D800 were released last year, DxO Labs published the results of the sensor performance of both cameras. The initial tests showed much better results for the D800′s sensor than the 5D Mark III.

Now, the DxO team is singing a different song after further comparisons between the cameras using high quality lenses.

Mounting a high quality lens makes all the difference. From our database, the resulting P-Mpix scores from various body/lens combinations reveals the D800 and Canon EOS 5D Mark III may be closer in resolving detail than expected.

When comparing the huge volume of data accumulated over measuring 147 lenses, one very surprising result was revealed. The average sharpness scores of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III matched the Nikon D800 and if the results were based solely on the mean average, the Canon actually out-performed the Nikon.

Either way, the Nikon D800 sensor simply isn’t as adept at resolving detail, pixel-by-pixel, as the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. There’s another surprise as well.

New Act in UK Makes it Legal for Photographs to Get Used Without Payment

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Lets just let this sink in a little: In a attempt to possibly kill off professional photographers, the UK has a new act that makes it legal for photographs to get used without payment to the creators. A few photographers instantly went “WHAT!” A few others said some phrases so colorful they could not be repeated. The British government, in an appalling decision, is applying this to all photographs worldwide. Basically, this affects all photographers.

This new act known as the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act, which received Royal Assent, allows all work considered to be an orphaned work to be used for free. Orphan works are those which the creator cannot be found. In essence, this just does not mean the work of people who have passed. This applies to images that have no metadata also. The majority of websites and social media sites strip out all metadata. This makes an image and orphan work, allowing it to be used for free and for any purpose. If a corporation or individual proves they searched and could not find the author of the image, they don’t have to pay.

There is a lot more to this and you can …

Green Screen 101 from Bruce Logan ASC

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stop Academy

Bruce Logan ASC on Set recently in Australia

The basic reason to use greenscreen or bluescreen is to combine two different images on screen, shot at different times, and make them appear to be one.

Now very often we are just putting a person (like a newscaster) against a random image of something quite unrelated to the foreground. If that’s the case it doesn’t really matter what the background looks like or how you light the foreground as long as the greenscreen is exposed correctly (maybe a half stop under from key) making it possible to pull a good matte.

Most of the time I do greenscreen or bluescreen matting, I am trying to create the illusion that the foreground and background, when composited, are a single image shot in one location. This requires that the background and foreground have matching lighting.

What does this mean and how do we go about it?

We have to start with one image or the other. It is usually easiest control the lighting of the foreground, therefore we need to choose (or shoot) the background “Plate” before we shoot the foreground “FG.”

In shooting or choosing a Plate we should make …

DxOMark Says That the Canon 5D Mk III and Nikon D800 Aren’t So Far Off in Sharpness

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Alright Canon fans–time to breathe…everything will be okay. Planet 5D found a report from DxOMark stating that when it comes to pure sharpness, the Canon 5D Mk III and Nikon D800 aren’t so far off from one another. To come to their findings, they test each camera with loads of lenses and when good glass was paired with the 5D Mk III, there was almost no difference between this camera and the its Nikon competitor. In fact, they go so far as to say that sometimes Canons’ 5D Mk III outdid the D800–and once again with good lenses.

But what about the D800E? That is the camera that was designed to take full advantage of the resolution. According to the report, “In future tests, it will be interesting to see if the Sony sourced sensor in the Nikon D800E variant with its altered (zero strength) OLPF (Optical Low-Pass Filter) is significantly more efficient at resolving detail or if it’s as a result of the differences in fill-factor (affected by RGB filter transmission, micro-lens design and circuitry) between the Canon and Nikon sensors.” So we’ll just have to wait and see.

What does …

Photo by Scott Bourne made with Nikon 24-70 on an Olympus OMD body w/ Novoflex MFT adapter

I decided to test the Novoflex MFT adapter with my Olympus OMD-EM5. My pal Frederick Van Johnson and I were in Santa Barbara, CA and he brought out is Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens. I had the Novoflex Adapter MFT Nikon version. The short version of this post is simple. The thing works.

The longer version.

There are many inexpensive Micro Four Thirds lens adapters on the market. But I’d heard most don’t hold up. I’ve tested some cheap Chinese knock offs that are so loose the lens wiggles on both ends. I decided to try the Novoflex to see if it’s worth the extra money. At first blush, it’s obviously a precision piece of gear, very well made. It’s made out of very sturdy materials and has good heft and weight to it. It’s not cheap plastic like some of the adapters I’ve tried. There is no give or play when it’s connected to the camera and/or lens.

In my short-term test I found it focused well at infinity (something the cheaper adapters …

EF 100-400 Replacement in 2013? [CR2]

This is a brief excerpt from CanonRumors

Speculation has started againWe’ve received a few reports that an announcement for a replacement to the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS is “very possible for the end of August”. A few prototypes of the lens are currently in use in Asia.

This has been a lens that has been set for replacement as far back as I can remember. I think it’s more probable for release now that Nikon has put their new 80-400 out, which was an area of weakness for them.

We’ve heard from a few people that Canon is having manufacturing issues and that there’s a backlog of new lenses slated for production.
