Minimalist Photographs Showing the View Through an Alaskan Cabin Window

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Dec 27, 2012

When photographer Mark Meyer wakes up every morning in Alaska, the first thing he notices is the view through his room’s windows. Over time, he began to notice that this view took on a wide range of appearances across different times and seasons (mostly cold weather). He then started capturing a casual series of photographs that show the abstract, minimalist views that appear due to the rain, snow, and fog. The project is called An Alaska Window. Here’s what Meyer tells us about his project:

I live in Alaska in a log house that’s about 100 years old. It has these interesting, old (though not energy efficient), single-paned sash windows. They are at the foot of my bed and are normally the first thing I see in the morning. I noticed over the years that they are constantly changing with the weather and seasons, occasionally in interesting ways. They ice up in the winter, collect leaves in the fall, and occasionally steam up in the summer. So I started taking photos of them and the scene outside—mostly with the iPhone, but occasionally I’ll lug the dSLR up there. It has gradually turned into …

Nikon’s Service Center Can “Change” the Green Tint on Your D800

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Dec 27, 2012

Back in April, there was a small hoopla amongst Nikonians who purchased the Nikon D4 or D800 and discovered that the LCD screen had a greenish tint when compared to the D3s and D700. Nikon denied that anything was wrong with the new cameras, and stated that it was actually the older models that were too cool. A couple of months later, it was rumored that a soon-to-arrive firmware update would address the issue. That update has yet to arrive.

There’s now some good news for those of you looking for a fix “change”. Photographer Noah Bershatsky is reporting that Nikon’s service center will actually do the correction “change”.Here’s the letter he received from the center:

Bershatsky writes that the LCD is now accurate, and that it seems Nikon has a procedure for the correction in place:

It’s in good clean condition and the LCD matches my Colormunki Display calibrated monitor! From the enclosed impersonal letter, you can see that they have dealt with this green LCD issue before and they already had a fix in place. I really wonder why this couldn’t have been done with a firmware update.

Edelkrone Slider Demo Footage

This is a brief excerpt from DSLR Video Shooter

Finally a closer look at some Edelkrone slider footage! I can’t get over how clever this slider design is. Anyone think they will be getting one? Why/why not?

From the Youtube description:

Since the release of SliderPLUS+ there has been a wide interest and many filmmakers were very enthusiastic to see the worlds first slider that can move twice its length.

Up till now we only had the chance to show the virtual images of the SliderPLUS+ but now we are happy to share you the first demo video showing a real SliderPLUS+ fully working in action.

18″ Diva Ring Light Photo Shoot BTS

This is a brief excerpt from CheesyCam

Here are a few great still photo examples with the 18″ Diva Ring Light in use from YouTube member Lorenzo Pickett. From what I understand the only lights used were two (DIY) 4ft. CFL banks on each side and the 18″ Diva Ring Light placed center. Towards the end of the video he shows some great examples captured by this simple lighting setup. [Thanks Lorenzo]

The catch lights in the 18″ Diva Ring Light are effective because of the large diameter and distance to the subject. This can be used for Video as well. Smaller ring lights will only be seen as a small dot. The new version of the 18″ Diva Ring lights are now dimmable as the earlier models had only a simple ON/OFF switch. The new Diva Ring Light kit comes with a 5,600K Lamp (daylight), 3,200K Lamp (tungsten balance), AC Power Cord, and a Padded Carry Case. You can find more image samples, information, and kit prices for the 18″ Diva Ring Lightvia eBay (Click Here).

The Photographs Norman Rockwell Used to Create His Famous Paintings

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Dec 27, 2012

Painter Norman Rockwell‘s illustrations graced the covers of countless magazines over the course of the 20th century, becoming a much-loved piece of American culture for their simple snapshots of life. You might recognize many of the works, and even the name behind the paintings, but did you know that virtually all of the images started out as photographs? After coming up with a concept for a painting (he was almost always commissioned by magazines and ad agencies), Rockwell would enlist the help of a photographer (he rotated between a group of them) to turn that idea into a photo. The subjects in the photos were his friends and neighbors.

Once the photograph was made, Rockwell then used his artistic talents combined with simple tracing to translate that photograph into the painting he had in mind. Rockwell never painted freehand.

NPR has published a fascinating article and radio segment on this story containing behind-the-scenes photos and more details on Rockwell’s process. They write that the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts is planning to put Rockwell’s photographic archive online in the very near future.

Rockwell’s use of photography is also explored in a book …

Edelkrone SliderPlus+ Demo Video

This is a brief excerpt from CheesyCam

Ok, so i’m late to the party for posting this up, but I was busy during the holidays with the family. Anyways, in case you missed it, here’s a demo from Edelkrone’s unique SliderPlus+. It’s a 1ft slider (to fit your travel bags), that travels 2ft. Doesn’t sound like very much sliding movement, but as with any tool, you just have to be creative about what you’re using it for. There are still questions about how smooth the slider really is when operated by hand, but with a motorized adapter on the way, this slider can be very consistent with movements.

How Serious Am I About MFT Cameras? Canon Camera Gear For Sale

This is a brief excerpt from PhotoFocus

Yep I am making the switch and selling ALL my Canon gear. It’s all like new!

I am retiring from professional photography on November 2, 2013. I thought I’d hang on to all my Canon gear with the idea that I’d use it for fun and the occasional assignment I might take from an old client as a favor. Then the Olympus OM-D system came along. It’s smaller, lighter, cheaper and less likely to get me in trouble with security. I bought every lens Olympus makes and two OM-D bodies so I am set. I can always rent the Canon gear if I really need it for something but so far, I can’t see any reason going forward to just leave all this stuff laying around in my closet.

That means I am selling my Canon gear. I sent private emails to friends who purchased the lion’s share of the gear. The specialty lenses like the big primes went quickly to past bird workshop clients. As did three of the five 1DX bodies.

I have the following left to sell. All of this gear was purchased new in 2012 as a tax write off. All is in …

Why We Photographers / Creatives Should Look Out For Each Other

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

Let’s be honest, writing for a photography website, you notice that a lot of us photographers like to gripe at each other. Hey, you’re more than welcome to express yourself as you wish because this is the internet after all! Although, I wanted to do a short positive post about how and why we should be a little nicer to each other. Sometimes it equals more resources and more money. Reason enough for you?

A superhero-themed shoot I did last year was done with all volunteer helpers / photo friends. They held lights, volunteered props and extra gear, acted as extras, and let me throw them around (literally)

If you have tried your hand at independent professional professional photography at all, you have quickly discovered it isn’t easy… especially on your own. There are no job hours, there are no guarantees, there are no benefits, no job security, etc etc etc. Most importantly, there is nobody around to tell you what to do every day except the grumbling in your stomach, the roof over your head, and creative the passion in your heart.

I feel like in the past (before the strong prevalence of social media), commercial shooters …

Canon 1DC – introduction to the professional 4K (H)DSLR

This is a brief excerpt from Cinema5D News

The Canon 1DC has generated a lot of fuzz when it was presented at NAB 2012. So far we’ve been waiting for the release of the camera (coming on January 2nd) and there haven’t been any real reviews yet. Here’s a new ad by Canon that shows the camera’s photo capabilities when taking a still from the 4K video it produces. It’s obvious that there are downsides to taking stills from a 4K video which are mentioned briefly in the ad, this is certainly a feature that should be reviewed and tested thoroughly before making a buying decision. Here’s a still from a 4K video. It has the typical Canon HDSLR softness to it when viewed at full resolution. Reminds us of images from the 5D mark III but a lot bigger of course. As mentioned in the video the 1DC records only 4 minutes of MJPEG video onto a 16GB memory card. That is certainly not much and additionally to the $12000 camera body you will probably also need those 128GB SD cards. One 128GB card will hold 32 minutes of 4K footage. We’ll certainly have more content and info about the 1DC once it comes out. Bare with us (we’re in the …

Sony All but Promises More Full Frame Video Beyond 2012: Mirrorless, or Otherwise

This is a brief excerpt from NoFilmSchool

2012 marked a monumental year for Sony. Not one, not two, but three full frame video or video-capable cameras were announced, and on the same day, no less. One of these constitutes the only full frame camcorder to date, the NEX-VG900, so the historicity really can’t be discounted. Doubtlessly responding to consumer and industry feedback, and before the models the company has announced have even been released yet, Sony isn’t content to let the waves they’ve made in our cozy little pond merely ripple back. Instead, they’ve all but confirmed yet another stills/video camera in production, targeting even more pieces of the market share they’ve aggressively sought to carve out. In this case, Sony’s bringing all the more good news for full frame enthusiasts — especially those looking past the A99 — and those DSLR users with positive mirrorless shooting experiences.

The camera has no officially confirmed name yet, but Sony Alpha Rumors is offering its highest-end endorsement for this information, with kudos to The Verge for reposting:

These last two weeks I contacted all my best sources and they now all(!) confirmed that the next Sony Full Frame camera will not be a new SLT …

Canon G1X Successor Due at CES 2013?

This is a brief excerpt from PhotographyBay

A recent patent from Canon reveals plans for an 18-70mm f/2.8-5.8 zoom lens, which would be a practical fit for an APS-C follow-up to the Canon G1X and its 1.85x-cropped sensor, which measured 15-60mm at f/2.8-5.8.

A couple of problems with the G1X, which I noted in my initial G1X Hands-on at CES 2012, that I could see looming for a camera with this potential lens are the slow aperture at the long end and the rather long minimum focus distance. And right now, the patent’s measurements sure don’t inspire confidence on the slow aperture issues.

Nonetheless, we could see a new iteration of a fixed lens, APS-C camera from Canon around the corner…

Stay tuned for all of my reports from CES 2013 just over a week from now.

The Story Behind an Iconic Photograph of Michael Jordan in Flight

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Dec 26, 2012

You might recognize this iconic photograph of Michael Jordan flying through the air during the 1988 NBA Dunk Contest in Chicago. It was captured by renowned Sports Illustrated photographer Walter Iooss Jr., a man who has created some of the most memorable photographs of athletes over the past fifty years (another of his iconic photographs is “The Catch“).

As a followup to its ranking of the 100 greatest sports photographs of all time, the magazine caught up with Iooss to find out about the story behind this photograph.

Iooss also shared the same story back in 2008 over at The Digital Journalist:

The problem with shooting the NBA slam-dunk contest was that you never knew how the players were going to dunk, especially Jordan. In 1997 he had twirled and dunked with his back to me. But by this time I knew him a little better. As he sat in the stands three hours before the contest, I said, “Michael, can you tell me which way you’re going to go, so I can move and get your face in the picture?” He looked at me as if I were crazy but then said, “Sure. Before I go out to dunk …

A Photography Tattoo Based on 120 Film Backing Paper Designs

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Dec 26, 2012

Photographer Michel Jones has one of the most unique photography-related tattoos we’ve seen yet. While most photography enthusiasts who get inked may choose designs that are easily recognizable by the general public (e.g. cameras, lenses, photos), Jones went with a design that is enigmatic to most people and even foreign to many photographers. His tattoo is based on the backing paper that comes with 120 film. Here are a couple examples of what the backing paper looks like in case you’ve never seen it before:

Here’s what Wikipedia says about the long symbol-filled sheets:

The 120 format is typical of roll film [...] The film is [...] attached to a piece of backing paper longer and slightly wider than the film. The backing paper protects the film while it is wound on the spool, with enough extra length to allow loading and unloading the roll in daylight without exposing any of the film. Frame number markings for the three standard image formats are printed on the backing paper.

Bellamy Hunt writes that the tattoo is “almost like some kind of modern tribalism” (the tribe of analog enthusiasts?). Jones is certainly very involved with the world of film …

Portraits of Albanian Women Who Have Lived Their Lives As Men

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

For her project Sworn Virgins of Albania, photographer Jill Peters visited to the mountain villages of northern Albania to capture portraits of “burneshas,” or females who have lived their lives as men for reasons related to their culture and society. Many of the women assumed their male identities from an early age as a way to avoid the old codes that governed the tribal clans, which stated that women were the property of their husbands. Peters explains,

The freedom to vote, drive, conduct business, earn money, drink, smoke, swear, own a gun or wear pants was traditionally the exclusive province of men. Young girls were commonly forced into arranged marriages, often with much older men in distant villages. As an alternative, becoming a Sworn Virgin, or ‘burnesha” elevated a woman to the status of a man and granted her all the rights and privileges of the male population. In order to manifest the transition such a woman cut her hair, donned male clothing and sometimes even changed her name. Male gestures and swaggers were practiced until they became second nature. Most importantly of all, she took a vow of celibacy to remain chaste for life. She became a “he”. This …

Olympus Hints at a Mirrorless Successor to the E-5, DSLR Line to End?

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

In a recent interview with Quesabesque, Miguel Angel Garcia, the CEO of Olympus Spain, dropped another “official” hint at what the camera company is cooking up to replace the E-5. The subsequent article, which initially said that the camera would be compatible with both Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds Lenses, has since been reworded to state simply that the replacement for the E-5 will be “capable of harnessing the full potential of Four Thirds lenses.”All of the remaining details come courtesy of DSLRmagazine and previous statements made by President of Olympus, Haruo Ogawa. They’re reporting that the next iteration will be somewhere between the E-M5 and E-5 in size and come equipped with a “spectacular” electronic view finder, some very advanced new features, and a price tag that outweighs the one you’ll find attached to the E-M5. In regards to lenses, the magazine says to expect an MFT mount, and a special FT adapter that will make good on Mr. Garcia’s promise mentioned above.

The upcoming E-5 replacement is said to be smaller than the E-5 DSLR but larger than the E-M5 mirrorless camera

An Introduction to Aspect Ratios and Compositional Theory

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Here’s a primer for beginning photographers on the concepts of aspect ratios and compositional theories.Aspect ratio is photo’s width/image height, with the long dimension first. There are six common aspect ratios for cameras today (and as many as you like if you use the crop tool, but that’s another subject for another day):

1:1 – Square format, traditionally the realm of 6x6cm Hasselblads, and now popularized by various mobile apps.

5:4 – Large format and sheet film cameras, mainly 8×10″.

4:3 – Broadcast television and video used this aspect ratio, originally in 640×480 pixel resolution; small sensor cameras and compacts (which inherited early video CCD architecture) have been using this aspect ratio ever since. Four Thirds and Micro Four thirds are the larger consumer formats to use it; in medium format there’s also 645 which has the same aspect ratio for both film and digital.

3:2 – Double a movie frame; famously invented when Oskar Barnack rotated the film through 90 degrees and doubled the width of the frame to create the 24x36mm ‘full frame’ 35mm camera format. Almost all larger sensored DSLRs use this today.

16:9 – HDTV format; not a native aspect ratio for digital still cameras, but useful to provide …

Patent: Integrated Lens for an APS-C Compact Camera?

This is a brief excerpt from CanonRumors

Camera Lens 18-70 f/2.8-6A patent has shown up for a lens that is an 18-70 f/2.8-6. It looks like the lens could possibly be for a fixed lens APS-C camera. The PowerShot G1X, while a cool enough camera, didn’t catch on. Canon may not be done exploring a large sensor fixed lens camera.

Personally, I’d be more into a Sony RX1 style camera for a few dollars less.

As a side note, the G1X was announced last year for CES, and that’s coming up in January.

The Future of the Combination of Video and Stills

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

In the last several years camera development has taken huge strides in giving photographic capabilities of stills to video. Non film makers now have the capability of taking cinematic quality video without needing to upgrade from their dslr. In this video, Untitled Film Works unpacks the continual merging of stills and video.

While this video seems as much of an advertisement for Canon’s 1DC as anything else, the conversation brings up an interesting discussion regarding the future of photography. Pulling stills from video is nothing new, the technique goes back to 35 mm motion picture footage. In the past, quality video didn’t easily translate into a quality print. With the advancing capabilities of dslrs, that line has begun to quickly blur.

There are clear advantages to shooting video over stills, you never have to miss the moment. If it’s possible to get an image with the same quality by using video as by taking a still, is there any reason to shoot stills anymore? For most photographers, does the easy shift to video threaten you at all?

Researchers Creating Database of Photos That Elicit Human Emotions

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Researchers at the University of Leuven in Belgium are embarking on an interesting mission, and they need the help of willing photographers. What they’re attempting to do is create a database of photos based on how they make the viewer feel. The project and website, dubbed Pictures With Feelings, can then be used to further our knowledge about human emotion and how specific moods come about. Where you folks come is in providing the most emotionally stimulating images buried in your archives.“A picture depicting a huge spider is likely to evoke a feeling of fear and is therefore situated within the left upper quadrant (negative valence – high arousal).”

The researchers want a little bit of everything, or as they define it: photos that evoke emotions from all over the “valence-arousal space.” Pictures of sleepy puppies would evoke happiness and contentment — positive valence, low arousal. Pictures from inside the pipe at a surfing competition, or staring into the mouth of a shark would evoke something closer to fear and excitement — negative valence, high arousal.

“A picture depicting a sleepy kitten is likely to evoke relaxation and contentment and is therefore situated within the right lower quadrant (positive valence – low …

Instagram’s Policy Fumble Sparks a Class Action Lawsuit

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

After Instagram backpedaled and removed some of the more controversial language in their new privacy policy agreement, it seemed the worst was over for the Facebook-owned company. The service has surely taken a hit, but when you have over 100M users, you can probably withstand quite a few. But in the words of Yogi Berra, “It ain’t over till it’s over,” and if Instagram user Lucy Funes and San Diego-based law firm Finkelstein & Krinsk have anything to say about it: it ain’t over. Those two parties have launched a class action lawsuit against the popular photo-sharing service. After looking over the revised version of Instagram’s proposed policy changes, Ms. Fumes has decided that there are still several sections she’s less than satisfied with, and has enlisted the help of Finkelstein & Krinsk to make sure they don’t go into effect.

The specific portions that have been called into question are, ironically enough, fairly common on other social networking platforms. The basis of the argument is centered around three statements.

BTS: Documenting Lions in the African Bush For Over Thirty Years

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Dec 25, 2012

Dereck and Beverly Joubert have spent the past 30 years living among lions in the African country of Botswana, capturing incredible photographs and footage of the majestic creatures that have garnered widespread praise. They are considered two of the world’s preeminent experts on the big cats, having created tens of films, books, scientific papers, and articles in National Geographic magazine (along with a list of filmmaking awards, including five Emmys).

CBS’ 60 Minutes recently paid a visit to the Joubert’s, creating the fascinating video above that shows how the duo live and work, and how they’ve dedicated their lives to documenting and protecting the cats from human threats.

Through their dedicated work — they often spend years tracking individual animals and documenting their lives — the Jouberts have made numerous discoveries regarding the wildlife in Africa, and have captured some of the rarest footage of the wild animals the world has ever seen.

One example is when they filmed a leopard caring for a baby baboon after killing its mother:

The Jouberts have been very involved in protecting wild lions and their habitat in recent years, having experienced the drastic decline of population numbers in just the past …

Make a DIY Remote Shutter Release Using a Cable and a Soda Can Tab

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Dec 24, 2012

Remote shutter release cables are extremely simple devices, but they can cost quite a bit if you buy the official accessories sold by major camera manufacturers. Instructables user nk dtk has an awesome makeshift alternative that’s dirt cheap: all you’ll need is a cable and a can of soda! The cable needs to be a 2.5mm male to male cable. Any soda can should do as long as it has a generic tab on top. A pair of pliers is also helpful.

First, you bend the soda can tab into roughly a 90-degree angle. This is where the pliers can come in handy, but feel free to bend the tab with whatever method or tool you’d like, as long as it comes out looking like the example above.

You’ll need to bend the little strip of metal inside the tab’s hole as well, to make it fit snugly around your cable’s metal tip.

Stick your cable’s 2.5mm connector through the tab’s hole, wrapping the strip of metal around your connector tip.

That’s pretty much it. Plug the other end of the cable into your DSLR, and then touch …

Using my Dad’s Old Manual K-Mount Lenses on Micro Four Thirds

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

FLTR: Panasonic G1 + Lumix 20/1.7, Tokina 135/2.8, Revuenon 50/1.8 + K->MFT adapter

When my dad gave me his old Pentax ME SLR last year, it came with three lenses: a Cosinon 28mm f2, a Revuenon 50mm f1.4, and a Tokina 135mm f2.8. The body was in pretty bad shape, though. Not only did it have lots of dents and scratches and parts of the leatherette missing, it also had massive light leaks and would scratch the negatives I ran through it. So I decided to buy an adapter to use the K-mount lenses on my Micro Four Thirds camera — one of the best purchases I ever made.

FLTR: Cosina 28/2, Pentax ME + Revuenon 50/1.4, Tokina 135/2.8

My dad had used this particular ME body for years. I remember that he always had it with him when I was a child. During one fatal incident at a beach in Sweden, however, it got in too close contact with the sand. From that moment onward, it would scratch ugly horizontal lines into the negatives. Despite being serviced a couple times in the meantime (light seals, meter, shutter), the scratching propblem never went away. So the camera now has a place on my shelf, as an item of …

Frozen Moments Of Summer For Your Christmas Eve

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

If you hate the cold and couldn’t spring south of the border before Christmas, here’s a project from photographer Mark Tipple, titled The Underwater Project, that will have you feeling a fake tan in no time. The Underwater Project is basically the inverse of surf photography and Mark says, “Surf photography’s been around forever. I wanted something different.”

Photographer Has $2,000 in Camera Gear Go Missing After a JetBlue Flight

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

When photographer Jess T. Dugan picked up her luggage after a flight from Chicago to Boston on December 18th, something didn’t feel quite right. It felt a bit lighter than it should have. She opened it up, and, lo and behold, several thousand dollars of camera equipment was missing — oops.Just as you or I would have done, Jess’ next move was to send a concerned e-mail to the folks over at JetBlue, reporting the incident and asking that they reimburse her for the insured value of her equipment — an amount far less than the costs she will actually incur in replacing it. Her argument was that, in accordance with TSA regulation, she did not lock her bags. She also knows for a fact that only JetBlue employees touched the bags between Chicago and Boston. The issue seemed fairly cut and dry.

Unfortunately, all she received in return was a cordial e-mail apologizing for her misfortune, explaining that the TSA does, in fact, allow you to purchase approved baggage locks, and informing her that she will not be compensated for her loss per JetBlue’s Contract of Carriage. Here’s an excerpt of the email:

At JetBlue we make …

Freezing Time and Space Using a Bullet-Time Rig of 100 Digital Cameras

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Last week we shared a guest post by photographer Martin Legeer on how he built a Matrix-style bullet-time camera rig using 50 Canon DSLRs. Shortly afterward, Greek photographer Theodoros Tziatzios of Real Creations sent an email telling us about his own camera rig projects, which use double the number of cameras.

That’s right: a camera rig with 100 cameras for extremely smooth 360-degree views of subjects that freeze time and space.

Earlier this year, Tziatzios and his company built one of the rigs for a 360° Timefreeze Project at the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens. Passersby could create their own “timefreezed” video for free and share it with friends.

The team used nearly 100 Olympus digital still cameras arranged in a giant circular rig 9 meters (~29.5 feet) in diameter. All the cameras are wired together in a grid and triggered simultaneously.

To produce an illusion of movement being frozen, turned, and resumed, the team used two video-capable DSLRs, placed on each side of the rig and aligned with the first and last cameras, respectively.

The rig was used to capture half a million photographs over the course of 13 days, resulting in 3,000 timefreezed videos.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes video showing how it was built:

Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer Starts Putting Her Photos Where Her Money and Mouth Are

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

When it comes to the Marissa Mayer/Yahoo!/Flickr love triangle, a little timeline of events is always helpful. So first we had Marissa Mayer, Google’s 20th employee, take over as CEO of Yahoo! after several other people over the course of 12 months just couldn’t cut it. It was around that time that the #dearmarissamayer movement began, with the message “Please Make Flickr Awesome Again” at the top of its list.

Mayer and Yahoo! wasted no time, the next day they responded with a call for employees and their own plea: “Come Help Us Make Flickr Awesome Again.” And it seems they meant it. Since then the Flickr team has doubled in size, and Mayer herself created an account (a real one, not the fake one that popped up in August), showing her Flickr team some love that they never received from either of their previous two CEOs.

Mayer shared this photograph of herself standing with Yahoo co-founder David Filo.

Finally, we’re up to now, and the Flickr support (both literal and moral) from the head honcho continues: ever since Flickr released its revamped mobile app a couple of weeks ago, Mayer has actually been using it, …

World’s First EOS-1D C Motion Image Shoot

This is a brief excerpt from CanonRumors

From Untitled Film WorksCheck out some of the work being done using the Canon EOS 1D C, the motion image results are pretty astonishing.

The art of motion image“The art and skill of a photographer is still required when using a camera like the 1DC. Understanding and harnessing of light, composition and interaction with your subjects are all vital skills of a photographer and are not replaced by the idea of motion image capture. Photographers also use a variety of techniques to obtain unique looking images (like long exposure times and the use of remote flashes) these times of images would not be reproduced in video. I see the biggest step forward using motion image capture the ability to record many individual moments in time, all the while silently as there is no shutter being released. This could have great benefits in situations where you may want to remain more candid. Subjects could also feel more relaxed not knowing “photographs” are being taken.”

Batteries and Battery Management for Photographers

This is a brief excerpt from PhotographyBay

Batteries

With the love of photography, especially on location speed light use, comes the need for batteries and a way to manage them. I started out using alkaline batteries. They were cheap, easy to replace, and very easy to find when out on a shoot. But I realized I was throwing them away as fast as I was buying them. At this point I started to think that there had to be a better way.

I started researching rechargeable batteries. All of the ones I found initially had the same issue, they would lose their charge over time. I needed a battery that was rechargeable, but acted like an alkaline. I found the Eneloop batteries by Sanyo that stated they were slow discharge and would have 75% of their charge after 3 years of non-use.

I was skeptical, but decided to give them a try. They worked and the worked well. In my non scientific tests, they held up in my flashes as well as alkaline which always lasted longer the NiMH. I could now charge up these batteries and leave them in my bag with no worries about dead batteries.

Charging

Next dilemma, how to charge the batteries so that I …

Kessler post teaser video for the Pocket Jib Traveler

This is a brief excerpt from DSLR News Shooter

By site editor Dan Chung:

Kessler have posted a video on Vimeo showing their latest jib product called the Pocket Jib Traveler. Its a travel jib that attaches to a regular tripod and features a telescoping design. Only 27 inches long when compacted, it to extends to 74 inches in overall length. Weight capacity is said to be 10 lbs so it should cope comfortably with DSLRs and lighter camcorders.

Pocket Jib Traveler Teaser Video from Kessler Crane on Vimeo.

The jib itself weighs only 5 lbs and counterweight is handled by an adjustable sliding weight bar. Price is anticipated to be a very competative $599.95 US. No are no further details at present and there is no release date as yet.

In the interests of full disclosure I am a Kessler shooter but this site is not a sales affiliate of Kesslercrane.

Fine Art Photographer Jess T. Dugan’s Camera Bags End Up Empty After TSA/JetBlue Inspection

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

It’s one of every photographer’s nightmares: finding that all your gear is suddenly gone. Unfortunately, it seems that the TSA/JetBlue may have given themselves some early Christmas gifts–or at least that’s what Fine Art Photographer Jess T Dugan claims according to his blog post.

The story is really quite thrilling and in a nutshell, Dugan checked in his camera bag (something we all dread doing) and it came back empty once he got off the plane. Jess has insurance (as do I, and I personally recommend State Farm) but he’s only insured for a certain amount of the gear. He sent their customer service an email and also CC’d a bunch of the big wigs over at Jet Blue about it. The kicker is where they respond, “We certainly do not allow or promote any type of disrespect toward our customers’ belongings.” and continue to say that if he has evidence, it should be reported to the police. JetBlue also very nicely seems to say that they don’t care.

Personally, I’ve yelled at many TSA agents about manhandling my gear. But this just seems like gross disrespect; …

Looking Back – My 12 Favorite Bird Photographs From The Last Decade

This is a brief excerpt from PhotoFocus

I’ve been doing a lot of self-reflection lately. I’ve realized (late in my career) that for me to become an artist I have to get out of my own way. I have to be involved in something that I care about and you have to love my subjects. I also have to look back at what I’ve accomplished and set markers for my career. That way I can know wether or not I achieved what I wanted to.

I decided to select 12 photographs made over the last 10 years that are my personal favorites as part of this process. Note I am not saying that these are my best 12. I’m not saying they are the 12 best sellers. I am saying they are my personal favorites. We have to give ourselves license to enjoy and like our own work and for me, this process of looking back is part of that permission. Since I spent most of the last decade photographing birds, I selected 12 bird photographs. I hope you enjoy them.

In no particular order…

Capturing Dubai With Timelapses And Wingsuits, Plus Behind The Scenes

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

Several years ago Richard Schneider of PictureCorrect.com decided his new years resolution would be to begin training to be able to fly a wingsuit. This dream along with his passion for photography eventually led him to Dubai, where he captured the footage you’ll see in this video. Learn more about Richard and the work it took to get to this point in the full post.

After being inspired by watching a video with Loic Jean-Albert skydiving in a wingsuit, Richard followed the sport closely and decided to go through the necessary training to become a wingsuit flyer himself. He had to become an expert skydiver, which required its own training and skills, so this was no simple task.

Prior to the Dubai trip, Richard spent 6 months trying to plan and prepare for his jump. He had the necessary licenses as requested by the dropzone in Dubai, so he assumed that he was ready. However, about a month before his trip, the dropzone folks called to tell him that new construction going on would in fact make his landing area much smaller than was previously planned. This meant that they would now require Richard to pass landing accuracy tests …

End of an Era: Canon Officially Adds the 5D Mark II to Its Discontinued List

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

The Canon 5D Mark II’s illustrious career is coming to an end. The DSLR, which Canon Rumors calls “Quite possibly the most popular and influential DSLR in history,” has been added to Canon’s official list of discontinued EOS products over in Japan. Here’s a screenshot of a machine translated version of the page, showing the 5D Mark II listed in the Amateur Model section:

The 5D Mark II shook up the DSLR market when it was announced back in September 2008. The 21.1-megapixel full frame camera was the first in the Canon EOS line to offer video recording capabilities, pioneering the HDSLR movement that has exploded over the past few years.

The Nikon D90, announced one month earlier, was actually the first video-recording-enabled DSLR on the market, but it only captured footage at 720p. The 5D Mark II one-upped the D90 and saw much wider use due to the fact that it was the first DSLR to offer 1080p. Before long, photographers and videographers around the world were buzzing with excitement as the camera saw more and more acceptance as a serious filmmaking camera.

The Nikon D90 beat the 5D Mark II to the video recording game, but …
