Nikon D400

The D300 was announced in August 2007 and the D300s in July 2009

The age of the camera suggested a replacement for 2011, but nothing appeared in 2012…

Nikon still hasn’t produced any good prime lenses specifically for its DX (crop) format, and with Dxxxx cameras moving up in specifications, some have wondered if there is a place at the top level for Nikon’s DX range?

We’re remodeling two bathrooms, and as part of a barter deal with the contractor I am doing a series of before and after photos. I’ll post more about that later, but I just wanted to drop something in quickly about the lighting on the detail shots I was doing today.It’s a quick-and-dirty, two-light setup and the effect is almost like a charcoal drawing—sort of 2-D and 3-D at the same time. And try as I might, it’s pretty hard to mess this up.__________The two lights in this case are a gridded key and a ring fill. And while there aren’t many universal solutions in photography, if you are shooting detail shots this one comes pretty close.The key is in the way the two work together. The gridded key (in this case an Einstein e640 mono with an 8.5-inch standard reflector and a 30-degree grid) spotlights the object, creating an area of full exposure just where you want it and falling away where you don’t.The ring flash (in this case, an SB-800 in an Orbis ring flash adapter is the floor to the exposure. Photojojo’s The Kick Light is a Light Studio That Attaches to Your iPhone

It seems that Photojojo is a neverending source of gadgetry awesomeness. Their latest offering is called ‘The Kick Light’ and attaches to your iPhone. The Kick Light is a compact light studio that sports an array of LEDs that can be remote-controlled via WiFi to light up in almost any color. Via an iPhone app, you can control the LEDs’ brightness and hue, set a white balance, or program the LEDs to display various light patterns. Of course, you can also use The Kick Light–which has a standard tripod mount–with an Android phone, or with any other WiFi-enabled camera, but you’ll have to do without the app then, and program it via the buttons on its body.

Here’s an unboxing of the new Aputure Amaran 528 LED Video lights, and a few tests to show the difference in spread (diffusion) and light output. Canon 1D X Firmware Update Version 1.2.4 Now Available

Canon has issued an update for the EOS 1D X. Firmware Version 1.2.4 incorporates the following functional improvements and fixes:

Improves the speed of the camera’s acquisition of focus when using a Canon Speedlite’s AF-assist beam.

Reduces the time it takes to display the metering result on the LCD or Viewfinder when the meter has been activated.

Fixes a phenomenon in which a “Caution 02″ message is unnecessarily recorded in the camera status log.

Fixes a phenomenon in which continuous shooting pauses when using a Canon Speedlite.

Fixes a phenomenon, when the Canon GP-E1 is attached, in which the GPS device settings are reset to default settings when the camera has been powered off.

Note:* This phenomenon occurs only with firmware Version 1.2.1.* After changing the GPS device settings, please be sure to power off the camera before removing the battery. This will ensure that the camera’s GPS device settings will be saved.

DaVinci resolve grading tips on profile documentary film

An important of our 3 day documentary class is editing and finishing.

During the 3 day class we held earlier this year in New York we made a profile film of a singer/songwriter Eleanor Dubinsky.

The actual shoot was only 3 hours in total and we shot on multiple camera formats.

The cameras that we use included:

Canon EOS C300

Canon EOS C100

Blackmagic design Cinema Camera

Canon 5D Mark II

Sony NEX 5n

The challenge when editing all of this content together is that different manufacturers have different basic ‘look’ from their sensors and processing and so even with care taken to set white balance between all cameras, you still see major differences between shots when you edit.

So if you want more control then I suggest taking a look at DaVinci Resolve Lite. Its free and if almost fully functional.

Word of Warning…. It really needs some processing power and a decent graphics card. But I run it on a late 2011 iMa 3.4GHz with 24GB RAM and 2GB graphics and it runs ok. It actually runs faster in my Retina 15″ MBP. But it does …

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 29, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced its parent company, Canon Inc., has reached a new lens-manufacturing milestone with the production of its 90-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras. Canon turned out its 90-millionth lens, an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (released in September 2012), on May 23, 2013.

The production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the Company’s Utsunomiya Plant. Since that time, supported by a wide range of users, demand has steadily increased and production has expanded. Today, Canon produces EF lenses at four of the Company’s manufacturing bases, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in southern Japan.

EF lens production surpassed the 10-million-unit mark in 1995, doubled to 20 million lenses in 2001, and went on to reach 30 million units in 2006 and 40 million units in 2008. Afterward, due to the rapid spread of EOS digital SLR cameras, production of EF lenses gained further momentum, crossing the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009, reaching 60 million units in January 2011, and hitting the 70-million-unit mark in October of the same year. Canon’s 1D C Firmware Update Hits America With More Details; 1D X Firmware Too!

Yesterday, we reported on the new Canon 1D C firmware update that was being released in Europe. It allowed the capture of 25p 4K video as well as fixed a couple of other problems. Information on the new firmware was given today in a product advisory from Canon USA under the 1D C listing. According to them, “Firmware Version 1.2.0 is for cameras running either firmware version 1.0.2 or 1.1.9. If the camera’s firmware is already version 1.2.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.” This could mean that cameras are shipping with the new firmware already in place. Once again, Canon’s support team will be the ones doing the firmware update.

The previous firmware update apparently addressed almost all of the previous concerns listed on the advisory page.

In the comments and on our Facebook page yesterday, we had lots of wary Canon users stating that the company doesn’t want to firmware getting into the hands of 1D X users to turn their cameras into 1D C‘s–the inference for this came from the fact that Canon stated that the cameras are the exact same with some minor differences.
