Review: Borrow Lenses’ More Cowbell

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

BTS Of Bar Refaeli’s First Nude Photoshoot (NSFW)

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

After Bar Refaeli took over the Superbowl with her controversial commercial, Bar found time to do something she never did before: pose nude for a magazine shoot. The magazine that paid her to do that is currently unknown, but somehow the photos leaked earlier today. Check out the BTS and the final results in the post.

We will update this post once we get more information about the photographer and the magazine.

CustomSLR C-Loop Review

This is a brief excerpt from PhotographyBay

CustomSLR’s C-Loop is an alterative camera strap attachment solution to the traditional top mounted camera strap loops that are located on each top side of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Instead, the C-Loop attaches to the bottom of the camera in the tripod mount that is found on virtually every camera.

CustomSLR sent a C-Loop to try out a few months back and I have not used a traditional camera strap attachment since. Carrying a DSLR with a lens attached is just a more natural feel when the strap is anchored to the bottom of the camera.

The C-Loop swivels 360° so there is no worry about your strap getting tangled or twisted even if your camera happens to spin around as you move it from shoulder to shoulder. Additionally, it is a big plus for me that the strap does not dangle along the grip – as is the case with the traditional strap mounts at the top and sides of DSLRs. When you lift the camera from your hip or stomach, the strap remains below the camera and out of the way.

Below is a short video from CustomSLR’s creator showing the C-Loop in action.

Another huge benefit for …

Canon C100 and C500 ND Filter/Sensor Dust Prevention Improvement Now Available for the C300

This is a brief excerpt from NoFilmSchool

Internal ND filters are incredibly helpful on set, especially if you’re in a situation where you are trying to move quickly. We’ve seen that the particular filters inside the Canon C100/C300/C500 are actually very specific to the cameras themselves, and they do a good job of blocking out infrared light, which starts to appear more with regular cameras as you block out visible light. It seems Canon has had some issues with keeping this area of the camera dust-free, so they’ve made some modifications. Check out the details below.

Here is the situation from Canon (thanks to Thierry at Digital Cinema Tools for sending this over):

As part of the on-going feedback process with customers Canon has implemented a revised design in the filter and sensor units of the Cinema EOS System’s EOS C100 and EOS C500 digital cameras that further improves dust prevention performance.

The new design further minimises any possible ingress of dust within the sensor and filter array and, after additional development, the same upgrade can now be performed on all existing purchased EOS C300 cameras and it will be implemented in all future EOS C300 and C300 PL models.

Re-imagining Portraiture with Video Portaits

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

Video portraits, or long portraits, are just what they sound like- a subject sitting in front of a camera for several minutes. I first came across video portraits about 3-4 years ago when I saw Clayton Cubitt‘s long portrait of photographer Noah Kalina. Cubitt is best known for his NSFW, in-your-face fashion photography. And while lot of the work in his portfolio has an immediacy and titillating flashiness, what caught my attention in his video portraits is the extreme patience and restraint they possess. There are no soundtracks to his Cubitt’s portraits. It’s just you and the subject. I found it hard to hold the subject’s gaze for the full portrait.

Tyler Shields, a celebrity portrait photographer, takes a slightly different approach to video portraits. He uses his photo shoots as an opportunity to do video portraits with subjects like Alison Brie and Zachary Quinto. His portraits are set to music and almost seem like music videos.

I’ve even dabbled in making video portraits. It’s hard not to experiment with video when it’s now a function of my camera. Though I can’t be sure what motivates video portrait artists like Cubitt and …

Photographer Plays With Her Breakfast to Create Imaginative Artworks

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Mar 31, 2013

Norwegian artist and photographer Ida Skivenes has made a name for herself on Instagram for her playful photographs of food. While most people may attempt to make their food look photogenic and/or appetizing in photographs, Skivenes chooses to go a different route: she views her plate as a canvas and her food as her medium. Skivenes regularly creates artworks on her plates using her foods. Her Instagram account @idafrosk has hundreds of imaginative photos of meals being turned into art.

Some of the pieces are part of a project titled “The Art Toast Project” and show famous works of art recreated on toast:

Others show clever scenes featuring landscapes, vegetations, people and/or animals:

Rather than gather ingredients based on the art she would like to create, Skivenes first comes up with a meal she would like to eat and then attempts to use those materials for her creations. Each piece usually takes 5-15 minutes. Once the art is created and photographed, it’s consumed, and then Skivenes heads off to her day job.

Most of the art is created during breakfast, since she does her best to have at least two “normal” meals during each …

Albumatic: Create Social Photo Albums With Friends Near and Far

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Social photo sharing, especially where location services are involved, is tricky. As we saw with the Color app debacle, privacy concerns rule all and no amount of pre-release hype and funding can overcome those. Still, as TechCrunch columnist MG Siegler said on his blog, “a killer social photo album service” should exist, and Albumatic is making a bid for that designation.

The app seems to be a hybrid between two apps we’ve covered before: the previously mentioned Color and Bump’s app Flock. It takes the location-based social sharing functionality of Color and puts it together with the friends-only privacy we see in Flock.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, you can start an album that friends nearby can join and friends far away can track. Over time as many friends as have the app and are in the vicinity can contribute to the album, while far away friends can keep tabs on your adventures and contribute to the conversation.

Here’s a short Albumatic ad that shows how the app does its thing:

Tascam DR-60D – dedicated, lightweight DSLR audio recorder

This is a brief excerpt from Cinema5D News

Compact music & audio recorders have been the HDSLR filmmakers solution to recording sync sound with their DSLR, but none of them have been dedicated specifically for DSLR. This is how an audio recording device looks like that had a DSLR in mind during its creation.

When you’re using DSLR’s for your film-making then this newly announced audio recorder, the only of its kind so far, deserves a look.

Tascam has made some famous portable audio recorders, but like anything that has to work with DSLR there’s usually some tinkering, workaround or limitation involved which already starts when mounting a bulky recorder with the cables sticking out at all the wrong places to your rig .

With the DR-60D Tascam tried to make a device that is lightweight and fits to your rig. If the setup as displayed on the left is the ideal place to put such a recorder is a valid question, but luckily there are more mounting points: The supposedly “rugged” DR-60D can also be mounted underneath the camera.

So what else makes this thing special other than the form factor?Well apparently they packed several features into the device to make shooting …

Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against Photog, OKs Reprinting of “Limited Edition” Pics

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

If you sell a number of prints of a photograph as a “limited edition,” should you be allowed to later reprint that photo in a different size, format, or medium and then sell the new pieces as a new edition? Apparently the US legal system believes the answer is “yes.”

A judge has dismissed the lawsuit filed against photographer William Eggleston by art collector Jonathan Sobel, who claimed that Eggleston’s decision to sell new prints of old photos hurt the value of the original “limited edition” prints. The lawsuit was filed in April 2012 after 36 new digital pigment prints by Eggleston were auctioned off for a whopping $5.9 million.

One of the prints, a 5-foot version of “Memphis (Tricycle)” (shown above), was sold for $578,500. Sobel owns an original 17-inch limited edition print of that photo — a print that he reportedly paid $250,000 for.

“Memphis (Tricycle)” as it appeared as its original dye-transfer print

Sobel, who owns 190 of Eggleston’s photos worth an estimated $5 million (one of the largest private collections in the world), sued Eggleston after the auction, seeking unspecified damages and a ban of new prints of Eggleston’s famous 1960s suburbia photos.

Last Thursday, judge Deborah Batts of the U. …

How I Caught the Photo Bug: News Editor Peter Walkowiak

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

I’ve been doing some form of art for quite some time now. As far back as I can remember, drawing used to be my creative outlet. Even though I had been doing it for a long time, it has always been awful. It was something I would do alone and be ashamed of. To this day I don’t think anyone has ever seen my old “art” and that makes me ecstatic.

As I grew up, drawing was abandoned for the adventure of finding something new. I’ve always needed to do something creative with my free time. Creating music was my biggest venture after drawing and this was even more embarrassing. I attempted singing, keyboard, bass guitar, but none of these were for me. Besides being completely awful I yearned for that sense of instant creation that drawing gave me. Then in 2004, I found photography.

Music took too long to learn and I was never known for my patience back then. I wanted something now and I wanted it to be amazing. The realization that I wasn’t a music prodigy hit me and I moved on. It was Christmas when my family was gifted a shiny silver …

Vine Update Allows Website Embedding for Videos: What This Potentially Means for Filmmakers

This is a brief excerpt from NoFilmSchool

Maybe all of you Vine users noticed an alert on your respective mobile devices, but for those of you who haven’t (or don’t have the app yet), Vine released an update that allows you to embed your videos on the web. Before the update, users were only given the option to share their videos on Twitter and Facebook, but now you can post your videos virtually anywhere, which can only mean that we’ll be seeing a lot more of Vine in the near future.

If you don’t know what Vine is, it’s a mobile app that allows you to create and post 6-second long video clips. It has been described as the “Instagram of video,” and its length restriction is reminiscent of Twitter’s 140 character limit — which seems appropriate since it was acquired by Twitter last October. Here’s an example of the types of videos you can make on Vine:

According to Vine’s blog, the option to share will not only be available for your personal posts, but also those of other users, given that they have already shared it themselves outside of the app. Vine had this to say about the update:

Tascam unveil new DR-60d audio mixer/recorder aimed at DSLR users

This is a brief excerpt from DSLR News Shooter

By site editor Dan Chung:

The Tascam DR-60d

Chuck Fadely over on www.newspapervideo.com has just posted some info on an interesting new audio mixer/recorder aimed at DSLR users. He says “Tascam has a new DR-60d recorder and mixer that will do four channels of audio while attached to the bottom of your DSLR. This thing looks great. High quality recording and a mixer in a nice small $350 unit. Supposed to have high-quality preamps and it has a safety track feature to record a duplicate channel at -6 or -12db down. It will record four channels so you can have a small shotgun in the hot shoe and still have two lav mics for your subjects.”

The price tag on the DR-60d does seem very attractive although it looks quite large compared to the competing Juicedlink, Beachtek and Azden mixers. The added recorder function is a real bonus, as is the safety track feature. For me this mixer will stand or fall on the quality of the preamps used and the resulting signal to noise ratio – my preference to date for the Juicedlink range is because I feel they provide the cleanest camera mounted …

Smile-Inducing Portraits of People Lost In Daydreams and Happy Thoughts

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Mar 30, 2013

Photographer Alexandra Sandu is on a mission with her photos: she wants to put a smile on people’s faces and make people who see her images feel good about their lives. Since September 2009, Sandu has been working on a portrait series titled Daydreamers.

For each of the portraits, the photographer asks her subject to close his or her eyes and think about something beautiful. The instruction is reminiscent of Peter Pan: “Just think happy thoughts.”The resulting portraits are somewhat different since you can’t actually see any eyeballs, but the pleasant and happy expressions on the subjects’ faces certainly have smile-inducing powers.

So far Sandu has collected more than 1,000 of these daydreaming portraits. You can find more of them over on the project’s site and on its Facebook page.

Thanks for sending in the tip, Romeo!

Future Presidents Photo Project by Matthew Jordan Smith

This is a brief excerpt from PhotoFocus

Guest Post and Photos by Matthew Jordan Smith

What impact will a photograph have in a hundred years? This question has been on my mind during the past few years. What if a photograph, created today, had the ability to impact lives and inspire people in the future?

A little over a year ago I started on a journey to create a project that would do just that, inspire parents and children to dream big. I call the project Future Presidents. I’ve been traveling the country, going state-by-state, photographing children and planting the idea that they can become a future president. It is my hope that the act of highlighting these children will impact them and other children to see themselves as possible presidents in the future.

Today, I’d like to invite you to join me and be a part of the Future Presidents project via Kickstarter. I need your help and support. In return for your support I am offering several support packages that range from a public thank on Facebook to a celebrity-style photo-shoot in Hollywood California.

This Slow Motion Holi Festival Video Will Make You Want to Protect Your Camera

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Holi from Variable on Vimeo.

The Hindu Festival of Holi falls once a year and is a celebration involving people throwing powder and dyes at one another. Growing up and having a father who was an active religious part of the Indian community, this video from last year’s Holi festival hits right at home with me. Here in NYC, we’re going to have our Holi festival tomorrow–and as someone who has gone to these things I can tell you from experience to cover up your camera with a Rain Guard. When I was younger, the stains sometimes wouldn’t come off my skin for days.

And while this video sure is cool and uses slow motion video to make it even more so, I can guarantee you that every parade will involve lots of people throwing powder and dye at one another and will be nowhere as calm as this.

ThrowBack Aims to Bring Some Nostalgia to the World of Smartphone Photography

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Most smartphone photography apps are all about three things: taking, editing and sharing. ThrowBack, however, isn’t about any of them. Instead of focusing on taking your photos and enjoying them now, the ThrowBack app wants you to “forget your memories so they can be remembered again.”

When you take a photo with the ThrowBack app, you’re not immediately prompted to add a filter, share on Facebook, or tweak it in any way. The app instead asks you when you would like to see it again, providing a slider that ranges from one month to five years. Additionally, if you don’t want to set the date yourself, the app provides a “surprise” button that will do that part for you.

The point of the app is to recapture that feeling of rediscovering a long lost photo and all of the emotions/memories it holds — something we’ve lost in an age where the most important picture is the one you’re about to share on Twitter. Speaking with TechCrunch, founder Calli Higgins explained that app is an “exploration between photography and nostalgia.”

Fire and Fashion: Behind the Scenes at an Insane Pyrotechnics Shoot

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Photographer Benjamin Von Wong likes to push the boundaries of what he does, and lately that pushing has involved playing with fire … literally. It seems he’s taken a liking to working with pyrotechnicians and creating out of this world long exposures doing it, so after a speaking engagement in November of last year, Von Wong put together an open photo shoot with pyrotechnician Andrey DAS and fashion designer Virginie Marcerou.

Anyone and everyone was invited, and in all they were able to get a group of about 50 people to show up as they lit up the freezing night with everything from smoke grenades, to sparklers, to ropes of fire. The video below takes us behind the scenes at that shoot, as Von Wong, DAS and Marcerou shoot, light and levitate their way towards the perfect shots.

Here’s a look at the results:

Take Control of Lightroom Using Touch Gestures with ‘The Touch’ App

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

The Touch is a Mac app created by Arctic Whiteness that allows photographers and videographers to get a better handle on Lightroom and Final Cut Pro X by adding extensive touch gesture functionality.

Using The Touch and either a magic trackpad or the company’s free iPad app, you never have to take your eyes off your work in order to tweak it. You can adjust sliders, move through photos, and even set star ratings without ever glancing down at the keyboard or digging through side panels.

The app allows users to do this by providing a set of preprogrammed one, two, three, four, and five-finger gestures and taps that combine to provide most of the functionality you’ll need when editing in either Lightroom of Final Cut.

If you edit on a laptop, you can already used The Touch with the trackpad built into your MacBook Pro. If, however, you intend on using The Touch on an iMac, you’ll have to have a Magic Trackpad or an iPad handy. Here’s another ad showing off The Touch’s functionality using the company’s free iPad app add-on:

Getting used to the gesture controls will probably take some time, …

The $2 Million Dollar Camera – Your Leica Porn for the Day

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

Some of you may have heard of David Douglas Duncan – famous for his war images, portraits and being a close friend of Pablo Picasso. His Leica M3 was sold for $2.19 million – the highest price ever paid for a commercially manufactured camera. Although the camera’s price has to do mainly with the images that came from it, it was also one of only four Leica M3Ds ever created – the “D” stands for Duncan. The cameras were ‘battle hardened’ to withstand some pretty tough situations.

The price paid for the camera is actually the second highest. The first prize goes to a 1923 prototype Leica O-Series for a cool $2.8 million. And you thought your Leica was expensive.

Duncan, 96, is considered one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. He gained notoriety as a Marine during World War II where he took photos while fighting the Japanese in the Pacific. His photos then got him hired, fulltime, by Life Magazine.

The standard price for an M3 back in 1953 would have been about $230, which I hear could have bought you a really nice car back then – but I also hear that no one had shoes, it always snowed, and the road …

100,000 Photo Timelapse of NYC!

This is a brief excerpt from F-Stoppers

Samuel Orr is a film maker from Bloomington, IN. He created this beautiful 4 minute long timelapse of NYC titled ‘A New York Day’ from over 100,000 photos and from dozens of locations. This video is just a fraction of a much longer timelapse film, which he hopes will be around 25 minutes once it is finished. He has created a Kickstarter for ‘New York Year’ which explains more about the film and shows other work that he has done. Enjoy!

Building Color Models and Exploring Color Spaces in Three Dimensions with Blender

This is a brief excerpt from NoFilmSchool

Color spaces and color models can be difficult to wrap your head around completely. There are additive and subtractive spaces, like RGB vs. CMYK, and different format/display technologies, like analog’s YUV vs. digital’s YCbCr — all of which you may have to traverse to achieve the final ‘look’ you want for your imagery. Not to mention that many color spaces are not absolute, meaning they don’t profile device-specific color representation. This can certainly induce a bit of a headache for newcomers to the color science realm. A great post by photographer Mark Meyer, featured recently on PetaPixel, explains how you can quite literally better-orient yourself to color spaces and models by, well, modeling them — in 3D open suite Blender, no less.

Now, many of us may not think of color spaces three-dimensionally, but a 3D perspective on color is, in a way, already dictated by the very terminology in use here: color space (not “color shape” like a rectangle) and color model (not “color map”) would seem to imply a dimensionality beyond the flat charts filmmakers may be used to grading with in our NLEs. Mark Meyer (originally on his own site, and featured by PetaPixel) takes …

Photoshelter and ASMP Partner To Create the Photographer’s Guide to Copyright

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Copyright infringement is becoming a bigger issue over and over these days on the web. And many photographers don’t know what they can do to protect themselves. I often see questions about this on Reddit, and used to get lots of inquiries about it when I would lecture at the B&H Event Space. But now, Photoshelter and ASMP have partnered to create this guide to copyrights for photographers. It’s very much worth the look and read, though it is longer than their normal guides.

To start, why not check out how to do a DMCA takedown notice?

Photog Who Shot Beatles Concert With a Fake Press Pass Sells the Pics for $45K

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

In 1965, amateur photographer Marc Weinstein used a fake press pass to get police to escort him stage-side at the historic Beatles concert in Shea Stadium. Now, almost 50 years later, he has sold all 61 of the images he captured there for a whopping £30,000 (or about $45,500). The story involves a little bit of bravery, a little bit of trickery, and a lot of luck. The Beatles’ 1965 concert at Shea Stadium would go down in history as the biggest concert the band would ever play. Taking place at the height of their fame, McCartney, Lenon, Star and Harrison played for a then record-breaking crowd of over 55,000 people that day. One of those people was Marc Weinstein and his fake press pass. He tells Examiner.com,

I just blended with everybody there. I had a method of operation; I just acted like I belonged. Anybody in authority, I would look the other way.

The method seemed to work for him, because he was ultimately able to trick police men into escorting him right to the front of the stage. That’s where, as luck would have it, the only other photographer present happen to run out of film, which is probably why the photos …

Panasonic Releases New GH3 Firmware V1.1, Will We See a Hack Soon?

This is a brief excerpt from NoFilmSchool

The Panasonic GH3, if you’ve been looking to buy one, has been out of stock many places pretty consistently. While it began shipping in November of last year, there have been quite a few shortages over the past few months — not too dissimilar from the launch of the GH2. That hasn’t stopped Panasonic from improving the product, however, as they’ve just released a new firmware update, version 1.1. Check out the details below.

Here is the list of updates in the new firmware:

Connecting to PC via Wi-Fi by inputting the computer name (the NetBIOS name for Apple Mac computers) is enabled.

1920 x 1080, 60p (NTSC) / 50p (PAL), 28Mbps mode is added in the video recording option of [MP4].

Speed of AF, consecutive shooting performance of AFC is enhanced in use with H-PS14042 and H-PS45175.

The monitor continues to display images during HDMI output even while [Auto LVF / Monitor OFF] is set.

Instability of shutter interval during interval shooting is improved.

When [Shutter AF] is OFF, operation is changed not to enlarge the image while using [Pinpoint AF] when even if shutter button is half-pressed.

Performance of image signal processing is enhanced during video file playback.

So obviously this …

Trailer Shows Pokemon Snap Turned Into a Live-Action Movie

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Mar 29, 2013

Here’s a bit of silly humor as we’re winding down the workweek: if you’re a photography enthusiast who has fond memories of playing Pokemon Snap during the days of the Nintendo 64, then you might enjoy this humorous fake trailer by Gritty Reboots, which takes popular movies, TV shows, video games and turns them into cinematic trailers.

This one imagines what a live-action Pokemon Snap movie would be like.In the film, we see protagonist Todd Snap visiting Pokemon Island in order to photograph all of the Pokemon needed for a report by Professor Oak. Equipped with his Canon DSLR, Todd scurries around the island on foot and in his little motorized, amphibious buggy.

Snap is like a cross between a wildlife photographer and a conflict photographer in the Pokemon world.

If you’d like to see how the trailer itself was created, here’s a 3-minute behind-the-scenes video that shows certain shots being filmed and put together:

Six Years Ago, Apple Made a Crowd Gasp With Pinch to Zoom and Swiping

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

If you want a taste of how fast technology progresses in the world of digital photography, just look at the consumer camera industry through the lens of a company that continues to make a big splash: Apple.

When Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPhone on January 9, 2007 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, cameras on phones were horrible and viewing those shoddy pictures was a pain. Then, almost overnight, the smartphone photography revolution — and the slow demise of the compact camera — began. It’s crazy to think that just six years ago things like pinch to zoom, turning a device to view photos in the correct orientation, and swiping to browse pictures were unheard-of features. Check out this short clip of Jobs’ making the capacity crowd gasp by demonstrating these features that we now take for granted:

Now step back 10 more years to December 20, 1996. On that date, Steve Jobs made a surprise appearance at the company’s meeting room after a decade of exile. Apple employee Tim Holmes was one of the people in attendance and shot a number of photographs of the event. His camera of choice? The Apple QuickTake.

Faking Anime Fight Scenes is Emerging As a Fun Photo Fad in Japan

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Mar 29, 2013

There’s a humorous new photography meme emerging from Japan. Students in the country are shooting photos that look like they’re ‘Kamehameha’ scenes from the popular manga and anime franchise Dragon Ball.

In each shot, one participant poses as a character exploding with energy, while one or more other subjects pretends to be blown away by the force of the blast. As with all of the popular memes that have emerged in recent years, participants are jumping onboard by shooting their own photos and then sharing them on the web.The photograph above was shot by Tokyo student named Ryo Ichikawa.

The technique behind the photographs is simple enough: just time the shot so that you capture the “flying” subjects jumping up and consorting their body into an ‘L’ or sideways ‘V’ shape (try touching your toes in midair). In the resulting photo you’ll look like you’re flying backwards (it helps if you can get some motion blur in the shot).

This new meme is likely due to the fact that a new Dragon Ball movie titled Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is set to hit theaters at the end of this month. …

Cyber-shot Branding May Return to Sony Phones Alongside Serious Specs

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Mar 29, 2013

Sony has used its “Cyber-shot” brand for digital cameras since 1996, and from 2008 to 2009 the company also slapped the brand on its Sony Ericsson camera phones. Now, with the smartphone industry investing heavily in camera technologies, Sony may soon be reintroducing the brand to its Xperia smartphones in order to compete against other photo-focused phones.phoneArena reports on a rumor that upcoming flagship Android-equipped Xperia smartphones will carry Cyber-shot branding and will feature serious camera specs.

Cyber-shot branding appeared on Sony Ericsson cameras from 2008 to 2009

One of the phones will reportedly feature a 5-inch LCD screen and “the best camera” so far in the smartphone industry. The claim mainly has to do with the fact that it will feature Carl Zeiss optics for its lens and a large sensor that rivals other heavyweight sensors on the market (e.g. the Nokia PureView 808).

The smartphone camera’s other specs will also be “top of the line,” and the new camera tech won’t cause the phone to be too bloated in terms of size.

Competition in the smartphone industry is intense as companies battle for market share, and camera quality is becoming one of the main battlegrounds on which …

I Collect Gingers: Photographer Shoots Portraits of Redheaded People

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Michael Zhang · Mar 29, 2013

South African photographer Anthea Pokroy is a self-proclaimed “ginger,” and has been on a mission to photograph other redheaded people in order to create a series of images about identity, prejudice, racial classification, segregation, and elitism.

The project is titled “I Collect Gingers,” and has grown to over 500 portraits since it launched in August 2010. Red hair is a relatively rare trait that occurs naturally in 1-2% of the human population.Pokroy writes that she’s drawn to the “beautiful, romantic colour palette of a ginger person,” and that there exists an “innate sense of community and collective experience” among redheaded people.

Each of the portraits was shot in a studio with stark lighting and white clothing. Pokroy intentionally aims for a look that resembles passport photographs that are intended only for documentation.

You can find the entire collection of photographs over on the project’s website.

Why not combine an OLED monitor and recorder? Odyssey7 does just that

We’ve seen digital recorders with monitors built in, but why not have a beautiful OLED monitor that has a digital recorder as an added benefit? The Odyssey7 from Convergent Design seems like a great idea. I’ve used the Atomos Ninja 2 before and while it is a great recorder, its monitor wasn’t anywhere close to high enough quality to be using as a full time monitor.

Our Chief Moderator Yoclay on the planet5D forums spotted this one – and it looks pretty impressive!

Introduction to the Odyssey from Convergent Design

The Odyssey family is a professional 7.7” OLED monitor with high-end monitor features, including Waveform, Zebras, Histogram, Vectorscope, Focus Assist, False Color, Timecode Display and Audio Level Meters, and 1:1 Pixel mode. Odyssey7 includes HDMI I/O, and SD/HD/3G-SDI I/O; in both single and dual link configurations. As you have come to expect from Convergent Design, Odyssey is low power, lightweight and comes in a rugged magnesium case.

The Odyssey7Q adds two bi-directional SDI’s (2-In, 2-I/O, 2-Out), enabling a 4K@60fps-ready option. Additional computational power supports recording/playback of up to four-compressed HD/2K simultaneously, support for one video stream up to 120fps and concurrent proxy and raw recording. Odyssey7Q includes a built-in Quad Splitter and Four-Channel Live Switcher.

Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q can be upgraded to a full professional recorder with the following options: Compressed (Avid DNxHD up to 120fps), Uncompressed HD/2K RGB 444 (up to 60p), 2K/HD Raw, ARRIRAW (full 16:9 and 4:3 support), and Canon 4K RAW.

Convergent Design is announcing two exciting new monitor/recorder products: Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q. The Odyssey family is intended to follow users as they journey through their careers from DSLRs to high-end 4K raw cine cameras, hugging the ever-changing camera technology curve and adapting to change without invasive hardware changes or costly upgrades. The Odyssey series combines Convergent Design’s knowledge and experience of both broadcast and cinematography recorders, while adding the capabilities of a high-end professional monitor for an

amazing $1295 USD (Odyssey7 – monitor only).
