Convergent Design monitor/recorder with Rent-A-Codec

This is a brief excerpt from FreshDV

Convergent Design has announced a very interesting new product series called Odyssey. It’s a monitor+recorder combo ala the Sound Devices PIX series, but with an interesting twist…the recorder component and individual codec capability can be rented on a project-by-project basis. The base 7.7” OLED monitor is to be priced at $1295, with no announced price on the rentable/upgradeable recorder features.

Specs and I/O on the monitors are impressive, with HDMI and options for single and dual-link SDI, as well as all the monitoring and exposure tools you’d expect on a pro monitor. The recorder uses SSD’s (they appear to be proprietary SSD modules), and supports Avid DNxHD (up to 120fps), Uncompressed HD/2K RGB 444 (up to 60p), 2K/HD Raw, ARRIRAW (full 16:9 and 4:3 support), and Canon 4K RAW.

Right now they are showing a gallery of what look like render pictures, and I’ve not seen an announced availability date for either flavor of Odyssey. We’ll get more info from them for you at NAB. Check out the full list of specs here.
