Mugshot Websites Sued for Violating People’s Right to Publicity

Several mugshot websites — including Just Mugshots, Busted! Mugshots, Mugshots Online, and MugRemove — are ringing in the new year with a massive class action law suit. According to NPR, hundreds of people who have been exonerated of all charges and had their records sealed are suing the websites for not only keeping their mugshots up and using them in banner ads, but refusing to take them down and “scrub” them off the Internet unless the victims pay a hefty fee.The suit was started by Ohio woman Debbie Jo Lashaway and her lawyer Scott Ciolek, who claim that these websites are not news outlets and therefore not exempt to the publicity laws they are violating by making money off of these pictures.

Publishing the mugshots is usually no big deal, since most of them are in the public domain. When the websites begin charging people hefty sums to have them taken down, that’s when things get hairy… or at least potentially unlawful.

According to Ciolek in his Interview with Guy Raz of All Things Considered:

Panasonic officially releases AF100A, shipping now

Panasonic has announced the release of the AF100A camera, an incremental update to the AF100 Micro Four Third camera system. It looks like it’s in stock right now at your favorite camera retailer, and shipping for around $4600. It also appears that with this announcement, the AF100 is now officially discontinued.

The AF100A appears to offer a few marginal improvements over the AF100…this is basically a minor rev bump to maintain the product. A key improvement would be the addition of 10-bit 4:2:2 HD-SDI output (for external recorders only), which Panasonic inexplicably insists on calling “enhanced 8 bit” (and which makes me wonder if they are fudging some math). There’s also a new enhanced focus feature, and some AVCHD ver. 2.0 mode additions. Not much, really. Nothing really to get excited about, unless you were already planning on investing in the AF100. Polaroid to Open “Fotobars” for Printing and Editing Smartphone Photos

Given the digital age, you’d think that companies would shy away from brick-and-mortar stores. But the lo-fi movement has been good to the instant photography giant, and so in addition to releasing a mirrorless camera later this year, Polaroid has decided to open up a chain of retail stores called “Fotobars.” The hope is that people will come to these stores and print the photos that have been lost somewhere in the zeros and ones of their digital devices.The stores will offer printing and editing services, aimed at helping the digital generation rediscover the joys of photography you can actually hold. After wirelessly transferring photos from your Camera Roll, Facebook or Instagram onto one of the Fotobar’s workstations, you’ll be able to add filters (as if you hadn’t already), fix red-eye, and adjust values like contrast and brightness.

Once the photo is edited to your heart’s content, you can choose various framing and material options, including wood, bamboo and metal. This will encourage consumers to print and display their photos, turning buried digital copies into works of art.

Minimalist Photographs Showing the View Through an Alaskan Cabin Window

When photographer Mark Meyer wakes up every morning in Alaska, the first thing he notices is the view through his room’s windows. Over time, he began to notice that this view took on a wide range of appearances across different times and seasons (mostly cold weather). He then started capturing a casual series of photographs that show the abstract, minimalist views that appear due to the rain, snow, and fog. The project is called An Alaska Window.Here’s what Meyer tells us about his project:

I live in Alaska in a log house that’s about 100 years old. It has these interesting, old (though not energy efficient), single-paned sash windows. They are at the foot of my bed and are normally the first thing I see in the morning. I noticed over the years that they are constantly changing with the weather and seasons, occasionally in interesting ways. They ice up in the winter, collect leaves in the fall, and occasionally steam up in the summer.
