Toshiba Unveils New CF Cards, Hopes to Capture Third of the Market by 2015

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

A week ago we shared some reports that Toshiba was developing a re-focusable smartphone camera, but it looks like its sights are set on bigger fish than just Lytro’s market. While the photo world was focusing on the tiny re-focusing camera, Toshiba officially announced a new line of high performance CF cards that should blow the competition away and, the company hopes, secure one third of the CF market by 2015.

The new cards — dubbed the Exceria Pro series — are set to launch in Spring of this year and bring with them read and write speeds very near the theoretical 167MB/second max provided by the CF’s UDMA 7 interface.Aimed at high-end DSLR users, the Exceria Pro series of cards will include 16, 32 and 64GB options with peak read and write speeds of 160 and 150MB/s, respectively — providing “the world’s highest level read and write speeds.” The only exception to those numbers is the 16GB card, which will have to settle for a write speed of only 95MB/s. In addition, the cards will also boast very impressive HD video capabilities, capturing 20MB/s full HD without any dropped frames.

There’s no question that these cards, when they …

Do Our Videos have Real Life Impact?

Guest post by Jonah Kessel:

iECONOMY: Factory Upgrade from Jonah Kessel on Vimeo.

My year ended in almost exactly the same place as it started. My hand was freezing and cramping up, holding the top handle of my 5D Mark III rig as I stared at a barbed-wire fence outside of the Foxconn factory in Chengdu, China.

But this time, things were a bit different. And as the year ended a thought about this difference occurred to me: collectively, our work can make a big difference.

First, let me back up to December of 2011 when the New York Times sent me to Foxconn, the main electronics manufacturer of Apple, to talk to employees about labor conditions. This video was being made for the Times’ iECONOMY series, which examines “challenges posed by increasingly globalized high-tech industries.” Foxconn denied us any access to the factory and told workers they would be fired if they talked to us.

With many obstacles in the way, I covertly made my video and the series started publishing. Following these initial articles, media from every corner of the globe jumped on board and Apple and Foxconn came under the world’s microscope. As mass media coverage expanded, …

Mugshot Websites Sued for Violating People’s Right to Publicity

This is a brief excerpt from PetaPixel

Several mugshot websites — including Just Mugshots, Busted! Mugshots, Mugshots Online, and MugRemove — are ringing in the new year with a massive class action law suit. According to NPR, hundreds of people who have been exonerated of all charges and had their records sealed are suing the websites for not only keeping their mugshots up and using them in banner ads, but refusing to take them down and “scrub” them off the Internet unless the victims pay a hefty fee.The suit was started by Ohio woman Debbie Jo Lashaway and her lawyer Scott Ciolek, who claim that these websites are not news outlets and therefore not exempt to the publicity laws they are violating by making money off of these pictures.

Publishing the mugshots is usually no big deal, since most of them are in the public domain. When the websites begin charging people hefty sums to have them taken down, that’s when things get hairy… or at least potentially unlawful.

According to Ciolek in his Interview with Guy Raz of All Things Considered:

The lawsuit that we filed in Ohio challenges these websites on the grounds of publicity rights, and that’s like a copyright or patent that …
