Compact Handheld Rigs at NAB

This is a brief excerpt from Ron Dawson’s DareDreamerMag

May 1, 2013 by robruscher

One of the themes at NAB was being light and compact. This theme was evident in the hand held rigs I saw there. ikan, Red Rock Micro, and Zacuto had three of these rigs and I had the chance to get my hands on them. Before reading on, here’s a video interviewing the company reps on the compact rigs that caught our eye:

ikan HoverflyLet’s start with ikan. At only $149, the Hoverfly is a great piece for anyone starting out and anyone wanting to add a super compact handheld rig to their kit. The plate will work with any lightweight camera. They had it setup with a Canon XF105 and the LCD screen was in a perfect position. The adjustable handle and shoulder pad makes this very easy to customize for you and your camera. Loved how quickly it folds up and how easy it is to transport. I’d much rather shoot with a shoulder pad than a chest brace so this was a big plus for me. Find out more on the rigs at ikan at http://ikancorp.com/.

Mother’s Day 2013: 8 Gifts for the Photographer Mom

This is a brief excerpt from thePhoBlographer

Mom is the person who brought you into the world. Our mothers have been there to protect us, love us, provide for us, and help us out in many different ways that we can’t count on two fingers. We owe them all a little something–and you should put some thought into it. This isn’t your typical list: the items presented here are carefully curated for the photographer mom or one with a taste for the artistic things in life.

If you’re reading this, you’re bound to find a gift for one of the most important women in your life.

ONA Brooklyn Camera Bag

ONA’s bags are exceptionally well designed usually with either leather or canvas. Plus, they’re usually uber fashionable. The Brooklyn is a bag created especially for women. It mimics the look of a daily handbag–which means that Mom won’t be wearing the fact that she is a photographer on her sleeve. However, once you pop the top open, you’ll discover loads of space for accessories, lenses, and a DSLR.

DSLR Pinhole Video? Is this something for your arsenal?

Well, it turns out that this past weekend (April 28th) was Pinhole photography day – I’ve been working on this story for a while, but you’d think I would have run into that date somewhere HA!

There are literally thousands of different ways to shoot – and one of the earliest was shooting without a lens by simply exposing film to light thru a pinhole at the other end of a box. Well, that’s cool for photography, but what about doing the same thing and making a movie?

The sample pinhole video below actually reminds me of one of the most popular planet5D posts “Canon EOS 5D Mark II video from a 102 year old lens – a Blast from the past!” (tho that was a lot more sharp because there was really a lens there).

I stumbled into the videos below a while ago in my constant quest for interesting things to show you guys and they’re quite interesting.

In my research, I also found it interesting that there are people making pinhole caps for every kind of camera mount and they’re using lasers to make the holes… maybe that makes it too perfect?

You’ve got an HDSLR, so why not give it a try? You can show us your videos in the planet5D forum or via the videolog!

There are samples here as well as a how to video down below.

GOODBYE AMERICAN DREAM – A Pinhole Video Short

This is a short film about the destruction of America shot with a pinhole lens on a Canon 7D. The pin hole lens cost nothing to make, and therefore represents nicely the economic scourge that has infested the land.

Cameras have gotten pretty darn complex these days what with their deluxe panoramic stitching functions and all.

But before we even start trying to figure out the inner-workings of such technologically advanced picture-makers, we remind ourselves that all we really need is one simple equation.

Hole + box = photo. Sure, oatmeal boxes make great pinhole cameras, but there’s another way!: the SLR Pinhole Body Cap, the most simple yet revolutionary way to get that beautifully lo-fi pinhole look.

Wondering if you could buy ‘pinhole’ caps? Check these out!

Leaf Shutter + ND + Flash: A Fuji X100s Daylight Primer

This is a brief excerpt from Strobist

Right about now I feel like Alice in Wonderland, holding the “drink me” cup. Having a leaf shutter, a built-in 3-stop neutral density filter and a real chip in a compact camera is opening up a whole new world of possibilities. But with these possibilities come some quirks, some compromises and a few technical things to be mindful of. What you need to know about leaf-shutter compacts and daylight flash, below.__________Looking at my Google calendar, I have half a dozen shoots scheduled over the next two weeks. And for every one of them, I am now trying to figure out ways to explore the sunlight-killing sync capabilities of my X100s.What I am finding: there are real limitations involved. But once you get a grasp of the quirks, there is still plenty of room to do things you have never been able to do before. This post will be part example, part white paper and part hacker guide. And my hope is that it’ll be a useful reference for people going forward.Wide-Open FlashThe first thing you have to realize with a leaf-shutter compact is that even the tiny little built-in flash actually becomes surprisingly useful. Is it …

Sony’s 2014 Alpha Lineup Expected To Outshine Nikon And Canon? [Rumor]

Can anyone challenge Canon in the HDSLR market? Here’s an interesting rumor – something that many would love to see — for at least it could put the hurt on Canon and make them wake up and get more aggressive with their offerings… (anyone wonder what the heck is different with the Canon Rebel T5i vs the Canon Rebel T4i?)… and you know how the Magic Lantern guys are doing some amazing things with some of the Canon lineup… maybe, just maybe, this will make something exciting happen in the market! What do you think?

Sony’s 2014 Alpha Lineup Expected To Outshine Nikon And Canon [Rumor]

Sony’s 2014 Alpha Lineup

When it comes to cameras, the big names up there are Canon and Nikon, although it was several years ago when Sony introduced their Alpha series of DSLR cameras that Sony became one of the brands that many professional photographers started turning to. Perhaps on the surface it might seem that the competition is more or less on par with each other, but according to the folks at Sony Alpha Rumors, they have received a tip, or rather an opinion, from one of their “top sources” that come 2014, Sony plans to outshine the competition with their new Alpha lineup of cameras.

Sony’s 2014 Alpha Lineup Continued

We reported before that the NEX-7n could be the only NEX system to be released by Sony this year, which is apparently due to Sony’s new CEO who has decided a more revolutionary change approach would be a better strategy for the company, versus the evolutionary approach, which would see Sony launch game changing devices rather than products that merely attempt to keep up with the competition and the market. Take this with a grain of salt for now, but we’re sure that many photographers are probably eager to see what Sony has planned for the future, so check back with us at a later date where hopefully additional details will be available.
