Batteries and Battery Management for Photographers

Batteries

With the love of photography, especially on location speed light use, comes the need for batteries and a way to manage them. I started out using alkaline batteries. They were cheap, easy to replace, and very easy to find when out on a shoot. But I realized I was throwing them away as fast as I was buying them. At this point I started to think that there had to be a better way.

I started researching rechargeable batteries. All of the ones I found initially had the same issue, they would lose their charge over time. I needed a battery that was rechargeable, but acted like an alkaline. I found the Eneloop batteries by Sanyo that stated they were slow discharge and would have 75% of their charge after 3 years of non-use.

I was skeptical, but decided to give them a try. They worked and the worked well. In my non scientific tests, they held up in my flashes as well as alkaline which always lasted longer the NiMH. I could now charge up these batteries and leave them in my bag with no worries about dead batteries.

Kessler post teaser video for the Pocket Jib Traveler

Kessler have posted a video on Vimeo showing their latest jib product called the Pocket Jib Traveler. Its a travel jib that attaches to a regular tripod and features a telescoping design. Only 27 inches long when compacted, it to extends to 74 inches in overall length. Weight capacity is said to be 10 lbs so it should cope comfortably with DSLRs and lighter camcorders.

The jib itself weighs only 5 lbs and counterweight is handled by an adjustable sliding weight bar. Price is anticipated to be a very competative $599.95 US. No are no further details at present and there is no release date as yet.

Fine Art Photographer Jess T. Dugan’s Camera Bags End Up Empty After TSA/JetBlue Inspection

It’s one of every photographer’s nightmares: finding that all your gear is suddenly gone. Unfortunately, it seems that the TSA/JetBlue may have given themselves some early Christmas gifts–or at least that’s what Fine Art Photographer Jess T Dugan claims according to his blog post.

The story is really quite thrilling and in a nutshell, Dugan checked in his camera bag (something we all dread doing) and it came back empty once he got off the plane. Jess has insurance (as do I, and I personally recommend State Farm) but he’s only insured for a certain amount of the gear. He sent their customer service an email and also CC’d a bunch of the big wigs over at Jet Blue about it. The kicker is where they respond, “We certainly do not allow or promote any type of disrespect toward our customers’ belongings.” and continue to say that if he has evidence, it should be reported to the police. JetBlue also very nicely seems to say that they don’t care.

Personally, I’ve yelled at many TSA agents about manhandling my gear. But this just seems like gross disrespect; …

Looking Back – My 12 Favorite Bird Photographs From The Last Decade

This is a brief excerpt from PhotoFocus

I’ve been doing a lot of self-reflection lately. I’ve realized (late in my career) that for me to become an artist I have to get out of my own way. I have to be involved in something that I care about and you have to love my subjects. I also have to look back at what I’ve accomplished and set markers for my career. That way I can know wether or not I achieved what I wanted to.

I decided to select 12 photographs made over the last 10 years that are my personal favorites as part of this process. Note I am not saying that these are my best 12. I’m not saying they are the 12 best sellers. I am saying they are my personal favorites. We have to give ourselves license to enjoy and like our own work and for me, this process of looking back is part of that permission. Since I spent most of the last decade photographing birds, I selected 12 bird photographs. I hope you enjoy them.

Capturing Dubai With Timelapses And Wingsuits, Plus Behind The Scenes

Several years ago Richard Schneider of PictureCorrect.com decided his new years resolution would be to begin training to be able to fly a wingsuit. This dream along with his passion for photography eventually led him to Dubai, where he captured the footage you’ll see in this video. After being inspired by watching a video with Loic Jean-Albert skydiving in a wingsuit, Richard followed the sport closely and decided to go through the necessary training to become a wingsuit flyer himself. He had to become an expert skydiver, which required its own training and skills, so this was no simple task.

Prior to the Dubai trip, Richard spent 6 months trying to plan and prepare for his jump. He had the necessary licenses as requested by the dropzone in Dubai, so he assumed that he was ready. However, about a month before his trip, the dropzone folks called to tell him that new construction going on would in fact make his landing area much smaller than was previously planned. This meant that they would now require Richard to pass landing accuracy tests …

End of an Era: Canon Officially Adds the 5D Mark II to Its Discontinued List

The Canon 5D Mark II’s illustrious career is coming to an end. The DSLR, which Canon Rumors calls “Quite possibly the most popular and influential DSLR in history,” has been added to Canon’s official list of discontinued EOS products over in Japan.Here’s a screenshot of a machine translated version of the page, showing the 5D Mark II listed in the Amateur Model section:

The 5D Mark II shook up the DSLR market when it was announced back in September 2008. The 21.1-megapixel full frame camera was the first in the Canon EOS line to offer video recording capabilities, pioneering the HDSLR movement that has exploded over the past few years.

The Nikon D90, announced one month earlier, was actually the first video-recording-enabled DSLR on the market, but it only captured footage at 720p. The 5D Mark II one-upped the D90 and saw much wider use due to the fact that it was the first DSLR to offer 1080p. Before long, photographers and videographers around the world were buzzing with excitement as the camera saw more and more acceptance as a serious filmmaking camera.
