The war was in its final year. The Philippines fell faster than anticipated and the invasion of Okinawa wouldn’t occur for quite some time. Iwo Jima served as a base for an early warning system for the Japanese, and the Americans successfully occupied the island, weakening the system. The American flag was then raised twice with Rosenthal capturing the second one on February 23, 1945, four days into the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The raising of the first flag has largely been forgotten as the renowned photograph depicts the second raising. The first flag was photographed, but unfortunately, the flag was too small which prompted the raising of the second. Rosenthal’s image came across President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s desk who saw it as an excellent chance to help advertising the upcoming war bond drive.
Rosenthal’s photograph won the Pulitzer Prize that year, and while that may seem like an obvious choice, it is doubly significant for being the only photograph to win the Pulitzer in the same year it was taken.
